Laupa 6BR Split Necks

Waiting on my first 6BR and ran across this thread, good to know!
I will inspect them before loading and go from there.
Haven't ordered any yet, any preferences where to get brass? I have yet to see anyone selling once fired brass.

I just received mine from MileHigh just recently and it was lot P00726201, which was reported by DJ as having an excessive reject rate. I visually checked one of my boxes last night and found seven bad ones with folds, meaning that box has a 7% reject rate. Of course, this has little to do with MileHigh, it's just their current stock.

Lapua will replace them, but then you end up with some of your brand new brass from different lots. That doesn't matter to some people, it does to others.

Just use them for foulers or early sighters. Matt

Ah, I forgot to mention these will be formed into a Dasher. Those folds may very likely split.

Oh, and I usually end up making a few foulers while I'm turning ;-)

Kevin can you tell us what lot this change was made on? I have some I would save for future projects if it predates the change.

I was talking using the new replacement lot for foulers. The ones with the crease will blow through when forming. I don't shoot them for forming because of the dirt and torching of my chamber. They will blow through. Matt

I just got two new boxes,,3 pieces had indentions in the shoulder like when you size with way too much lube,,I went ahead and loaded them to see if it would blow out,,they didnt they split in the shoulder and into the neck,,I just tossed them,,as long as the other 197 are OK I am fine with the 3 bad ones,,

I had a box of .220 Russian last year and it was so soft it wouldn't turn properly. It would just mush and they looked terrible after turning 10 rounds and quit. He replaced them. It seems lapua for all the so called quality inspections they do that any garbage would get out of the door. I wish they would get a bit more stingy with their inspections to avoid all these odd boxes with bad brass in them. They get a good buck for the product and I love the stuff however Norma hasn't made a lot of mistakes like that. Also contrary to popular belief I get many reloads out of theirs without loosing brass for loose primer pockets.

This has been an excellent thread. Many thanks to Lapua for being so forth coming with the issue. I sent 100 rounds out to be hydro-formed to 6BRX. Two came back with splits in the shoulder. I was disappointed, but assumed that it was part of the risk in modifying the case. This thread has explained what happened, so I inspected the other 500 un-fired/not loaded cases. I found 2 that had been sized in a 6BR Redding die with shoulder folds and 3 in the other 4 unopened boxes had a fold in the shoulder.
Thanks again.
WildPete

I've found 8 in the last 300 I've opened. The 3 from the most recent box will be shot in a BR chamber. I'm going to see if the hold up while being supported by the chamber they were made for. I fully understand why they're splitting in chambers that move the shoulder. One slipped by me on my first box and split the shoulder in my BRX chamber. If they hold up the a normal BR chamber at least I can use them for foulers. If not, I'll keep collecting them until I have enough to make it worth my while to send them in to be replaced. At an average of 3% it might take me a while.

The trouble with that is if they blow through the hot gases torch the chamber. I value my barrel and chamber to much. I just pitch them. What is 2 dollars of brass verses a $200.00 chamber and a $325.00 barrel? Not to mention if you have a brake on it also. Matt
