Split Necks?

Im having trouble with split necks. It is new Remimgton brass 22-250 loaded 18 years ago. I shot it in 3 22-250 rifles measured neck before and after. .250 before and. 254 after. It splits every case in all rifles. No signs of excessive pressure. I have 400 rounds left over from a 1995 varmint hunt. Varget powder. I had a guy tell me brass will get brittle with age even if you dont shoot it. I had no trouble with it splitting necks in 95 when i last used it. Any advice?

Pull the bullets, dump the powder, and then anneal the necks. Do maybe 10 or 20 at first, load them up and see if that works. That's what I would try.

I had similar problems... pull the bullets, push out the primer (it is safe) and anneal them.

Mine was neck turned and loaded - not annealed. Tirning will harden the brass - but I didn't know it at the time, it was 1978.

I got "T" splits in about 30% of the loaded cases, so I tossed them and started again.

It happened in two calibres.

[/quote]................. It depends on the conditions where they were stored. I've had 22-250 neck splitting after 10 years storage. un-turned necks.

It depends on humidity,the amount of neck tension,hot or cold or both.

I'm surprised the material properties of the alloy changed in such a relatively short time, but you learn something everyday.

Is this just with loaded ammo?

I bought a supply of Win brass in several calibers in late '92 and early '93 when Bill Clinton 1st took office due to worries about assault rifle bill and whatever else he was planning for gun control. Its been stored in original bags (was sold by weight, then sealed in a heavy plastic bag) inside the house.

This was bulk Rem brass unturned neck, not annealed. Has been stored in my house so there were no big temperature or humidity varation.

I've had necks split after several loadings but this is new brass 1st loading. ??? It was Varget powder and about the same temp outside as when i last shot it in 95 on a May Montana praire dog shoot

I have some Remington 222 brass that had the necks turned, loaded with 4198, behind Sierra 52HP MK, about 1976. For whatever reason I never used that one box of 20. Got to it finally during the past years scramble for ammo. The necks are not split however one can clearly see the depth to which the bullet is seated in the neck. I don't mean a close examination....just pick one up and look. There is no sign of corrosion or anything unusual except a very distinct line on the neck. I pulled a couple of bullets from the cases without any problem and other than that line everything looked normal. Almost as if the neck were 'shrink-wrapped' around the bullet.

I think the member's advice above about pulling some and annealing is spot on!

I am very surprised that these are first run cases ........ but brass does harden with age.

I would have thought that you'd need a few firings/sizings and then some time to kick it off ...... but your case says otherwise.

Taking the above member's advice on some cases will tell the story.

Products containing any amount or type of ammonia, vinegar, ethanol, or vapor from said product, may make brass brittle. The process takes many years. Brass should not be in the area where firearms are cleaned. Never chamber a round into a damp, freshly cleaned chamber after using an Ammonia based solvent. Annealing will not help. Or you just were unlucky an bought some bad brass. :-\
