Laupa 6BR Split Necks

Hello,
This is my my first 6BR and really like it so far. It is a 6BR Norma (so it should be a .272 neck chamber, I bought it used). I bought 200 new brass from Lapua. The first box I opened had one piece that was formed wrong (see below). Not a big deal, it happens. I used it as a dummy cartridge now.

So I fired the majority of the 200 wirh 28.6 of H4895 and jumping 105 hybrids .025" with good accuracy and no pressure signs. Then Sized them with standard Forster FL/neck sizing die. Then loaded up 25 more of the same recipe above and went shooting. I had 3 split necks! I couldn't belive it, it is only the second firing. See below pictures.

I also loaded 15 rounds of 30.0 varget jumping 105 hybrids .025" and had no preesure signs, good accuracy, and no split necks (second firing also). So did i get a bad batch of brass? Or another stuff happens and forget about it, keep on shooting?

Contact Kevin Thomas at 1-660-826-3232 and ask if he would take a look at them. He is the lapua rep. He is a great guy so don't get irate as he will work with you.

I've hardly ever opened a box of Lapua 6mmBR that didn't have 1 or 2 with a "V" fold that need discarded. Both from Brown box and Blue box over +10-years. Once in a Brown box from back around 2006 there were 4 discards. Seen them in 220 Russian and 243 Lapua brass as well. Have never seen the "V" fold rejects in any other brand but Lapua.

Had the identical issue finding about 3-4 in a Box. Kevin replaced them x 2
contact him.

Do you know if Kevin is able to replace them with the same Lot number?
(else wise for me, a couple replacements wouldn't do me much good)

On a note, once I opened a box and hit the "Jake-pot" with 102-cases inside !!!
But guess how many "V" folds? ....... (yep I ended up with 100 anyway.... lol)

Thanks
Donovan

Usually he wants what you have and it goes back to lapua for testing and then it gets shipped to you from grafs.

I am in contact with Kevin and he is helping me out. I cleaned up the necks and I found two more cases with issues. One from the 30.0 Varget group.

So my questions for the guys that have split necks or v-folds, how is the rest of the brass holding in the group holding up? Are you still getting lot of reloads?

Donovan,
No, I can't replace from the same lot number (unless it's by coincidence) since we don't keep much stock here in the office. I have a box or two of most of our brass on hand and replace stuff like this fairly regularly. The divots shown in the OPs photos are indeed fairly common to the 6mmBR, the 6.5x47L and the 6.5x284. It's caused by a combination of the rather hard alloy that we use, and the large discrepancy between case neck diameter, and the body diameter. That, in conjunction with the sharp shoulder angles make these cases a real bugger to form properly. These cases should be caught during inspection prior to packaging, but alas, they do occasionally slip through. If any of you should run across this sort of thing, please feel free to contact me and we'll make it right for you.

If you would, please let me know the lot number of the cases involved, as this is how we track them back through their production cycle. I do up a QC defect report that I send back to the Finns, and they will want to know the lot number. This is found on the lower right hand side of the white stripe that runs across the top of the box, and will begin with, "P00xxxxxx". If you guys see any other members here who report similar problems (or any others, for that matter), please direct them to me so we can take care of them. I spend a fair amount of time on the road so I may not be able to get back to them immediately, but I will get back to them.

Thanks,
Kevin Thomas

I have no dog in this fight, just put together my first 6mmBR and no issues with Lapua brass or any other component.

But way to go Lapua and Kevin Thomas for being up front about issues and standing behind your product.

These days a little bit of honesty is worth 10x its weight in gold, well done.

That is phenomenal customer service. Yet another reason to shoot Lapua. Not very often do you see reps taking the time to do or even explain what Kevin has.

A big thanks to you Kevin for your time and efforts!!

I agree, Kevin has expertly taken care of this issue and replacing the brass with issues. I will continue to buy from Lapua.

Kevin,
I have recently incurred 115 of 300 Lapua 6mmBR cases lost in hydro-forming to 6 Dasher. Is it likely just this lot? The work was done by DJ's Brass, and we have had only a handful of splits previous to this lot. The Laupa lot # is P00726201.

I probably buy 5,000-7,000 pcs of 6br brass a year. I usually send them to Kevin at the end of the year. I spate them by lot # so he has that record, and he has always taken care or me.

i am actually running through my 6BR brass (300 pieces). good to know lapua has this kind of customer service in the states. i know i have one piece of brass already, with a few suspect ones.

just a longshot question, but will he take back 6br brass that split upon fireforming for 6 dasher?

Never tried. Just thinking out loud here.... you took their product... changed it.... why would they warranty it?

I know when I make 30br brass, all the split necks I see I toss them out if I have expanded them already. I don't even ask for those to be replaced.

If this is the new normal, what are the alternatives? It really is about whether we as customers can expect consistency from Lapua....not perfect. I never counted split necks before this lot, but isn't the historical loss ratio of 6 BR brass to 6 Dasher more like 5-10%? This lot was 38%.....this wasn't DJ's first rodeo.
