Lapua center x ?

Is anyone getting flyers with center x 22 ammo ? Out of 20 shots I am getting about 3 flyers. Yesterday I had one shot tthat I seen the bullet go down range and hit about 6 inches low. I could actually see the bullet arch. Like it had less powder than the other ones.

Hopefully, you don't have a lot of that lot to dispose of. If I got more center x, I would do everything I could to ensure it wasn't from that lot.

I have never seen Center X that bad. I have seen some shots stray 0.75-1.0" at 100 yds. that I thought might be ammunition, but to be fair it could have been a missed wind call. Six inches off with an accurate rifle even at 100 yards, I would check the rifle, firing pin, bore, crown, scope, base & rings for issues. If everything checks out Then I'd stay away from Center X. My rifles like Midas+ better but Center X usually stays +/- 0.75 MOA at 50 yards if I do my part. Good luck.

We have a regular Tuesday morning 50 yard benchrest match of 8 to 12 shooters where we each shoot 1 shot at each of 5 horizontally spaced targets + sighters. Each sheet has as many lines of targets as we have shooters. Each relay consists of 3 sheets each shot from a different bench (the shooters move between sheets). We end up with 5 columns of targets on each sheet with scoring being the best shot in each column (i.e. closest to the center). Our "X" ring is a circle 1/4" in diameter and it is usual for the winner of each column to have taken out 75% or more of the "X". A true test of your ammo.
Those of us who shoot Center X usually anticipate about 5 flyers per box. A flyer defined as being 3/8" or so off.

Your statement leads one to believe it is all CX? is all or just a particular lot? if it is all CX check your rifle especially the ignition/firing pin hit. also does it happen it other rifles?

I have been shooting 22lr benchrest for 10 years and shoot about 6 cases a year. Over those 10 years I have been about 50-50 shooting Eley and Lapua. I have never had a single flyer and have witnessed maybe 5 or 6 at most.
let's see, 6 cases a year, average the cost over the last 10 years @ 1400.00, comes out to about 84000.00

I don’t doubt what you say about flyers. Other shooters, myself included, may see them more often.

As a result, I have a question that I ask with all seriousness. The answer may be self-evident to an experienced and successful BR shooter using what must be a good rifle/barrel, but for other less knowledgeable and skillful shooters it may be helpful to put things in perspective.

What might be the explanation for the relatively low number of flyers you see with your rifle and ammo?

Is it one or a combination of the following or is it something else, something not listed below?

- excellent barrel(s)
- a good run of ammo selection, with no poorly shooting lots
- excellent supporting equipment, such as shooting rest
- shooter skill

Last nights flyer was .85 inches from center. The other 39 produced a .497 inch group with an average to center of .126 inches. The standard deviation radius was .146. That round was almost 6 SDs out ... I call that a flyer.

No wind and I wasn't drinking.

A flyer is a wild unexplained shot caused by defective ammo or a defect in the rifle.. Anything else is just a miss.
Absolutely correct! I could explain this explicitly from my performance in this last weekends IR50/50 Sporter and 3-gun Nationals, but very few here would believe or understand the truth, save for a few......and I just quoted one of those few.

20 plus years of shooting NRA Highpower, multiple rifles, barrels every couple of seasons, components to feed rifles, entry fees, trips all over half the country. It adds up. I don’t keep receipts. If you want to pursue a hobby, dream or a passion it will cost something.
