Lands and copper bullets

I was hoping someone can help answer the following question. I inherited some pre-64 Mod 70s from my father and all of his reloading equipment and data. I recently loaded some 30-06 168g Barnes Tipped TSX at .010 off the lands using IMR 4831 at 56gr after going off his handwritten specs. However, after reloading I read that copper bullets like a lot of jump. I haven't shot any of the loads yet but was curious if I should reseat the bullets a bit lower.

Thanks,
Chris

I've never seen any difference in more or less copper build up related to distance from lands. If this was your fathers load, he must have liked it. You could also try H4350 or IMR 4064. Shoot and let the barrel tell you what it likes.

Are those Barnes bullets solid copper? If they are then they will need a large jump to get them started cleanly in the rifling. Check Barnes web site as they have info with this very info about this issue. Also be safe with old load data as powders have changed quite a bit over the years and the safe loads may be different now if his data is very old.

Thank you! He passed a couple of years ago so I think the data is fairly recent. Although he had notes on the TSX bullets, I don't believe he had actually loaded any and he was not all that familiar with new technology, including the internet for information. I used 4831 because it was what I had in stock and there is virtually no powder to be found out there :( I will adjust the seating of the bullets and take it out to the range. Thanks again.

First off, and not to be a smart @$$, would be to look at Barnes load data. Or better yet, get their manual.
There is tons of information in the manuals aside from just the load data.

For instance Barnes reccomends a jump of 0.050" off the lands. There is a section in the manual giving reccomendations for how to find the best COAL for their bullets.

Reseated this evening to .050 off the lands :)

Don't assume anything. Barnes bullets often require more jump than other bullets, but, for best accuracy, I begin load development just like I do with other bullets. I seat fairly close to the lands with the first OAL, then try at least two shorter OALs and shoot groups with each.

Did you locate the lands yourself or just take the dimension your father used?

Did you reduce the powder charge before reseating the bullet deeper?
Yes, located the lands myself. No, I did not reduce the powder charge before reseating but my charge is within the suggested range provided by Barnes for the previous 165 bullet (no reference to IMR 4831 for the 168 bullet). Thanks
