Ladder question

muleman69

USMC -1st marine Div. RVN
Ran a ladder today ,eight rounds in .2 increments. Shot 6 rounds ,velocity increasing until I hit 7th round then it started dropping? 7th and 8th round lost velocity and went south? This was at 300 yards and calm today. Ladder was in a cluster no more than .500 in vertical except for the last two.

did you log each shot as it was fired ?
can you look at
shots
1,2
123,
234
345
456
and see a trend in less elevation change.
reshoot a 3 round group of what looks promising
if three look good re do with 5,
if 5 is still good start plying with depth

Okay I will try and find a trend then shoot again. Any idea why velocity dropped on #7&8?

Not knowing any of your load parameters or rifle your shooting from, makes it a difficult question to answer.
I've also witnessed very small gains and occasionally a loss in velocity with increased powder charges.
I believe due to barrel length and powder/bullet combination used you can reach a point of load efficiency so to speak.

Point of load efficiency is just what we were thinking . The peak load actually shot the best. Planning on going with it and one step down for some groups then work on OAL. The rifle is a dasher 28" brux. Trying to work up a load with RL/15 and 105 Bergers

I was kinda surprised when you said RL15.
RL17 is known to do exactly what you are describing.
Either way, yes, you've hit the peak efficiency for that powder and case volume.
Think of it kind of like an engine cylinder. You can only put so much fuel in till efficiency drops off.

that's why they make blowers and turbos!
(dasher is a 6br turbo!_)
