Labradar Radar Mode

centershot

To anyone else who still owns one. Other than what the book says, when do you use the radar mode? When I first got mine, used it all of the time. Now it doesn't work very well. The bars on the left side of the screen indicate radar strength, I believe. I get the bars in the external trigger mode but not in the radar mode. Why did they invent something that needs an aftermarket device?
Thanks for your input.

I assume you're talking about triggering the unit?

First off, in the spirit of full disclosure, I generally use an external trigger and will kludge it onto whatever I'm shooting before trying one of the native trigger formats (except airguns, where I use the microphone trigger, as there's not enough recoil to use the JKL trigger.)

That said, if not going external, try to use the blast trigger first, as it will get the unit reading prior to detecting the bullet downrange. That should minimize the amount the back-calculation it does to get muzzle velocity. This is the default mode of triggering.

If you're shooting in tight quarters or in a location where you can get echoes (ranges with narrow shooting stalls, enclosed shooting positions and the like) the triggering may be affected by reflected blast or the shooters nearby. If that's the case try doppler triggering (I almost never use this mode.) The unit will read the reflected signal from the bullet, and trigger to capture data. It may trigger on shots fired from adjacent positions if the shooter next to you is, um, less than accurate, but I think it will reject data obtained from a bullet entering too far downrange (though I have no idea what that range is.)

Playing with the trigger sensitivity may help to reject unwanted shots as well. Experiment and find what works best for you.

What type of firearm are you using, velocities, and range ?? Generally
slow projectiles with a large base such as the .45 acp, the Dopplar is
used. High power, user the trigger setting. Either way, you do need to
adjust settings for sensitivity for both .....When I set it for pistol use, and
select dopplar, I do not get accurate velocity readings. For pistol, I select
"trigger", pistol mode, and boost the sensitivity settings. This way gives
me a better muzzle reading.

Thanks for the responses. I realize that I could call them but wanted some first hand experiences.
I use the radar unit for rifle at an out door range without baffles.
It still seems weird to me that they would design something and then require an add on part to make it work.
The new Garmin unit works right out of the box.
The person that I bought it from said that it was not critical to put the correct bullet weight in. Do not know if this is true or not.

Adding the bullet is not needed if your just looking for the velocity
number. With the bullet weight entered for the shots your working
with, you will get the energy of the bullet calculated with the velocity.
number. I had one of the guy's going off about this same bullet
weight subject. He was griping about getting bad energy numbers
for a hunting load. Bottom line......He never read the manual but was
happy to bad mouth the Lab......Go figure. My Lab still works just fine
for being new out of the box almost 8 years ago.

My usual troubleshooting approach was as follows:
- confirm "Trigger Source" set to "Trigger" (i.e. not Doppler unless you're tracking arrows, slow stuff)
- there is a trigger sensitivity setting which is adjustable / configurable ( 1=most sensitive )
---- i used different settings for internal vs external trigger
- make sure the labradar is armed (LED is orange, not blue )
--- i would also set "Arm Time" to 600 which is 10 mins if i remember right
---- labradar would time out too often because people like to ask about the LR

Yes Sir !!......Max out the arm time and screen saver settings. Early on
in it's use, it would drive me nuts when waiting on a wind call and have
the screen go blank.

For those that buy a used Lab, and a manual did not come with it, there
are PDF manuals online.....

Who would ever forget to do that??LOL

I've actually checked the arming state, changed it to the other, and missed a shot because I disarmed it. I now use the app, which is at least a little clearer. Seems to me that it wouldn't have been too much trouble to have red and green for indicators, but I'm not a product designer.
