KM Neck Turner GAULING

CHROME

Silver $$ Contributor
Has anyone else notice the gauling on the inside of your case mouth when using the KM Carbide cutting mandrel on the actual turning device, not the expander....and how do you not get it, just use the standard mandrel W/O the cutter? New to neck turning, so your input is welcome.

The wax works ok but the PMA turning oil they sell works really good. It is higher viscosity and sticky so it stays put.

Well try what jonbearman suggests...but I have not had gauling problems with the wax...maybe slow down a bit on your turning?! ;)

When Turning necks with the K&M Neck Turner and you're using the cutting mandrels, slide the neck onto to cutting mandrel slowly and carefully before applying power to your portable screwdriver or portable drill.

When done turning, and just before removing the case from the mandrel, power your tool off, then carefully slide the case off.

Remember that the case has to be on the mandrel for some distance before the turner actually starts removing brass from the neck.

If you're sliding on or sliding off a spinning case [or even a non-spinning case] and it is not perfectly parallel with the cutting mandrel's razor sharp tips, you'll gall the inside of cases.

I went back to the standard mandrels and had Roger Miller grind off the sharp edges of my carbide cutting mandrels. :)

I noticed that KM also has a mandrel that does NOT have the carbide cutter on them....Im pretty sure the gauling is coming from the cutter. I turn them everywhere from slooooooow, to medium to fast. Doesnt matter, still there.

Dang I'm a dope!...I did not pay attention as you said "carbide cutting mandrel"....I was thinking regular mandrel not the cutting one. I think Outdoorsman's advise is right on! ...Guess I need to pay more attention to what I read! Getting late I suppose...LOL ;D

Outdoorsman is right. You have to slide the cutting part of the mandrel through the neck before turning the case. Same thing when you come off. Matt

Unless you want to cut the Donut out of the inside of a case neck then I wouldn't even consider using the Carbide Cutting Mandrel. It's too easy to cause problems inside the neck and muck up neck tension.

Otherwise do as "Outdoorsman" has said and be extra careful on entry and exit of the neck as suggested.

Standard mandrels aren't expensive.

Thanks guys, got up this morning and tried the "easy on, easy off" method and it seemed to really help! Now I just need to build up my muscles in my right are to holding the drill....or break down and buy the Bench Rite motor, or go to lowes/hd and get a "screwdriver type". :-\

I use a Ryobi 18v Cordless Drill, set on Low Speed. Battery Base is heavy, flat so the drill sits unsupported sideways to me and I use my right thumb to operate the trigger, left hand to hold the neck turner. I sit the turner and drill chuck over a cardboard box to catch all the shavings. No effort required, no sore hands from holding things.

As Ken Markle [the original owner of K&M] told me years ago, approximately 180 RPMs is ideal for turning necks. Following his advice, I purchased the Ryobi 4V Lithium-Ion Screwdriver (HP41LK) from The Home Depot. I liked it so well that I purchased a total of four. It produces exactly 180 RPMs. :)

Chrome, are you using a K&M brand expander mandrel to be perfectly matched to you K & M Turning tool mandrel ? I found out the expensive way when i started turning necks three years ago that you cant use say a Sinclair Expander mandrel and then use a K&M neck turner. I wrecked the inside of a number of cases in both 223 and 284Win before someone told me what i was doing wrong. :-[ :-[

Yes. KM everything. I fixed the problem. I started using the "easy on easy off, no turning the trimmer on till you are almost to the cutter way" Thanks to the earlier comments. Thanks for your input though. I did try the PMA setup after I was done banging by head against the wall....They have some great products ! Easy adjustments, and very accurate, both the mandrel and the cutter. Spoke to Pat at PMA, very nice guy to deal with.
