Just When You think You've Seen Everything!

At the rifle range today to tune up my 223 Rem Model 7 with 20" Douglas Match barrel getting ready for some hogging.

When I arrived, a fellow as shooting what sounded like a 105 Howitzer. The roar even made more intense with the brake on the rifle. No way was I going to start shooting until he finished. Fortunately, I didn't have to wait long, he was at the end of his ammo. I looked at the bench where he was shooting and saw one of the largest rifle cartridge cases I have ever seen for a shoulder rifle. It looked like a shortened Cuban Cigar it was so fat.

A conversation ensued. He said he was shooting a 375 Cheytac, 400 grain bullets, about 150 grains of powder! I think he said the rifle weighed 30 lbs. Just when I think I've seen it all in the shooting sports, something like this happens! Any of you ever hear of this cartridge? It's a monster!

PS: Joking, I told him that if any dinosaurs appeared in the neighborhood, I would surely give him a call. :)

What did his target look like?

What did his target look like?
He was testing loads. There were about 5 or so groups on a multiple bull target. Some groups were in the 3 to 5" range, some 1 to 2" range. He had a monster size Vortex scope, very large, over 30mm in diameter.

One note: he was shooting off a lead sled. Why I can't fault him for that given the massive recoil, although he claimed it wasn't bad, the stress on the scope must have been huge. He was a pleasant fellow, so I cautioned him about the lead sled effect on scopes, especially with heavy calibers. He wasn't aware of that and took note of it. Nice fellow.

This rifle was a cannon!

Well, how did your .223 shoot? What bullet, weight and powder were you trying ?
This rifle is extremely accurate. Has a Douglas match barrel No. 2 contour, 12" twist and a B&C stock. I shot 10 rounds at 100 yards, sitting off my cross sticks. Using my scoring system, I scored a 10x10-6X (10 = shot in the 1 1/2 ring, X = shot in 1" ring. I had a 10 to 15 mph cross wind with medium boil mirage to deal with.

Load: 25 grains of Varget, 55 Nosler BT, Federal 205M primers, seated .015" off the lands. All shots cold bore shots. I was not load developing; this is an established load I've used forever. I was practicing off my sticks.

I would post the target but because I am computer dumb and dumber and have a Lively Flip phone, I never figured out how to post picture on here. I can text pictures, however and Mr. Coonman300 posted them for me in the past when I got comments, "no picture - it never happened". Well, something happened. ;) There is no reason to boast, I long ago stop trying to impress people; there's no profit in that endeavor. ;)

The 50 isn't so bad if you are the one pulling the trigger or directly behind the shooter, but, its those off to the side that get pummeled by the muzzle blast/brake. Recoil is about like pulling the trigger on a 12 ga. 3" mag shotgun.
I had bought a large soda from Micky D's when I went to the range. Set it on the shooting table and at the first shot, was reminded why it was a bad idea to leave it there. Root Beer was everywhere for 10 feet off to the side/rear on one side.
