Just another 222 Remington

I just finished the 4473 for a Sako L461 in 222 Remington. I have on hand VV130. Waiting on the tapered base ring set, Berger 55s, die set and brass. Don't see much stuff on Sakos and loads. If y'all have loads to share, please post away.

These are the pictures from the seller. Will post some of mine once I get it all rigged up for the range. Plan to do load work in the stat house at Austin Rifle Club. Stay tuned.

What is a 4473 ?
The factory barrel is a 1-16" or 1-14 twist.
If not using factory Sako bases be sure to use a lead BB under the set screw so you don't damage the metal checkering on top of the action.

Will do.

Besides running a rod through the bore is there another way to find out the twist? By S/N?

I think 14, the older models may have been 16. you could run to an indoor range, shoot it off sandbags w some factory 222. that will give you a hint. keep us posted. very nice.

19 grains give or take a couple of tenths, of IMR 4198 with a 52 or 50 grain bullet.

I have the twin to that rifle, I don’t think the 55 Bergers will stabilize though. I use 50 grain Blitzkings or 52 Berger match in mine. Lots of powders will work well including VV130, VV133, IMR 4198, H322 and many more.

I will try to catch the order to see if I can change the 55 Bergers to 52

Had a 222 since 1970!! Always have used BLC-2.

A lot of powders work well in the 222. But like Nakneker mentioned, stay with 52's and under.

This is from 1955 when the 222 Rem ruled the Benchrest roost:
"Barney Auston’s record-setting rifle was built on an FN Mauser action with double set trigger, with a Hart stainless steel barrel, 30″ x 1 1/8″, chambered for the .222 Remington cartridge. The stock, made by Auston, has a hydraulic bedded as made by L. F. Landwehr of Jefferson City, MO. The scope is a 24X, 2″ inch Unertl. Mr. Auston shot 50gr bullets, custom made by W. M. Brown of Augusta, Ohio, with .705″ Sierra cups and soft swedged. His powder charge was 21 grains of 4198. The rifle rests, both front and rear, were also made by Auston."

I have all ways had a 222 and used 19 gr of IMR 4198 and just tried 21.0 gr of VV130 and I think I'll stay with 130 for a while shoots pretty good . In my gun 21. gr is about tops .

That's all I have now, 130. Still waiting on those dang rings from Midway and components from Grafs.

What bullet weight?

52 grain flat base bullet, N133, rem 7 1/2 or Fed GM. I'd look at BIB or BARTS or find some 52 grain bergers at least. That's where you are gonna find your accuracy.

I tried 133 and did NOT shoot max loads and the bullet shot way low . I have a long drop tube for max load but the case was full to the top so I didn't shoot max load . I may try it latter , Not a fan of compressed loads .

133 and 52g Bergers shot good in my three 222’s

5 shot group @ 100



133 with 52g Barts shot consistently better.
5 shot groups @ 100
