June Sets Record for NICS Background Checks

When people ask me what kind of gun they should buy? I say to them! If someone broke into your house while your home, would you shoot them? If they have to think about it or say I don't know. I say no you don't want a gun.

Joe Salt

I would not shoot someone just because they broke into my house. The standard is fearing for your life or the life of others. If I confront someone in my house and they run away, then I'll do my best to get a description and call the police. If I shoot someone who has de-escalated, then I am the aggressor.

The only state where you can protect property with deadly force is Texas, but no property is worth someone's life.

I highly recommend everyone read Andrew Branca's book.

We need to point these new gun owners to self defense training, both with the firearm and with legalities.

When I was a young pup and just getting my first rifle (22LR Bolt), my father told me something that stuck in my mind, "Once you pull that trigger, there is no way to take it back".

Bottom line, be sure that there is a need to take a life. Even if you are in the right, there will be consequences that will impact you at the very least financially.

Remember even if the law says you acted justifiably, there is still a chance that the family will bring civil suite against you that you will have to pay to defend against.

That being said, if my life or the life of my wife, or anyone in my home is in jeopardy, then I will take action. Likewise, if and I say if, as I don't believe it will happen, it comes down to total civil unrest or war, I would act. But the likelihood of a total breakdown of our system is highly unlikely.

Agree, it's not an easy decision to shoot at somebody to kill them. But, if and when your life or someone's life you are directly in control of their protection is at stake (NOT PROPERTY) I'd like to think we would all act in the same manner. Not to say our property is not important by no means but is it worth a life that you took is the question we all must ask ourselves ?

I have no way to prove it but I have had some ideas about the most liberal buying guns. I believe that they think they had to buy a gun because there is a second amendment. If there were no right to own arms they think they would be safe and would not need a gun. In fact they blame this all on us( backers of the 2nd amendment).

last night at dinner a Dr. Friend asked me which gun he should buy. I was stunned as he has been very opposed to a gun, even though several friends have tried to convince him. His comment was "if they're going to defend police, it is time".

This has been going on for a while now. The stores are selling their inventory. 9mm ammo is non existent around here and I'm in the boondocks. (probably why) I couldn't say whether it's to protesters or just people that are scared. We haven't had any big protests around here. Perhaps they're apprehensive?
I do know that my sister called and inquired about a pistol and she's never owned one. I told her that if she isn't going to get training and practice with it it might be a bad idea. So, I know that some people that would not otherwise be purchasing a firearm are interested now.

We're living in crazy times. I never thought I'd see things so upside down but there it is.

I will respectfully take exception to this. If a bunch of thugs are coming up my driveway with molotov cocktails meaning to burn down my home, I will shoot if I have to.

Then they would be an aggressive threat to your personal safety and you would rightly be in fear of your life. You would be protecting yourself, not your property.

If you shoot someone that is stealing or damaging your property and they are not an aggressor toward you or those in your home, then you are going to jail unless you live in Texas.

Read Branca's book. It it THE standard on keeping yourself out of legal liability.

@INTJ

If they are breaking into your house, how do you know their intentions? Don't you have to assume the worse and take action accordingly?

I realize these are all theoretical discussions but they happen in reality everyday

I am not the one that makes the laws. I recommend reading Branca's book. It is a quick and easy read. Much of what people think is reasonable and defensible is not.

On one extreme, if a person breaks into your house, you confront them and they leave, and you shoot them; you are likely going to jail.

On the other extreme, if it's well known that there has been a bunch of violent home invasions in your neighborhood, then you may indeed have a reasonable fear for your life with just the act of breaking in.

Most situations will fall in between those extremes, and it is our responsibility to think them through, study the law, be prepared, and act reasonably.

Yes, I am telling people to use judgement and develop situational awareness. Don't just take the simplistic view that makes you an easy target for prosecution.

After the Police Departments are defunded and abolished there won't be anybody to arrest you for defending your life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.
No one is breaking a leg to round up and arrest the thugs, thieves, terrorist and murderers we've got running the cities even now. Just do your best to stay out of the news
and for goodness sake do NOT let anyone interview you.

Dude, these self defense threads. You literally have seconds to stop someone from harming you.

Threat is in your home, remove said threat. Simple enough.

“Officer, I was in fear of my life, and my families life.”

Get good training, know your laws, act accordingly. A lot of things you can do to minimize being a victim, that still doesn’t guarantee you from not becoming a victim.

I own a lot of guns and NONE of them where bought for protection. I just like to shoot. I bought a bunch of pistols because, while all this epidemic stuff is going on, I have been staying close to home and started shooting more handgun competition. So a few new Bullseye Pistols and a Few Free Pistol guns.

It's not just 9MM that is missing. I went into a Stock & Field (used to be "Big R") a couple of days ago to see what the had for ammo. There was NO pistol ammo of any caliber, they had about 8-10 boxes of 270 Win and a similar amount of various shotgun shells. For the rim-fire selections they had around 12, 100 round boxes of Remington HV 22 Shorts, and probably close to 100, 50 round boxes of Federal HV/HP. All along where the empty shelves and those that had the aforementioned items were signs that stated a limit of two (2) boxes of any ammo was all that could be purchased.

Have you checked out inventory on TargetSportsUSA? If they don't have what you want, you can click on "Notify me when in stock" which has worked well for me. As a Premier member I get an extra 8% off and free shipping regardless of the quantity purchased. I have never seen them price gouge either. I am not a big fan of their web site as many calibers are there, but are hard to find. When you do the pull down you might want something not listing, but go to the search and try searching a few ways. Example I did not see .32 S&W Long WC on their caliber list. When I search for .32 S&W etc. I go no hits, but when I left out the "." and just used 32 S I go to them and bought some. Had a similar issues with .22 Remington Jet, but ended up finding it on the site and bought a bunch.

These times show us the true value of being able to load your own. I could put together 1000 rounds of 45 ACP in a day, if needed. I collect and save all my brass and maintain a bullet inventory for all the guns I shoot.
I’m mentoring one guy that shoots 9mm pistols. I put a kit together for him and showed him the basics. I don’t reload the 9mm, but I had collected about 2000 empties, so he got them too. Not only is he enjoying an interesting hobby, but he also has a nice stockpile of ammunition to get him thru these lean times. His wife and daughter are getting into it, so it’s turned into a family affair. He jokingly calls it his production line.
