Expanded Background Checks

I'm confused over the push for "expanded background checks" at gun shows, online, etc. I live in Vermont. Whenever I buy a firearm from a dealer I have to fill out the form and wait on an NICS background check. If I go to a dealer in a neighboring state, same thing.

If I buy a handgun from a dealer outside Vermont, it has to be shipped to a Vermont FFL who then does my NICS check.

If I buy a firearm through an internet transaction, dealer or personal, that firearm can only be legally shipped interstate to an FFL who then does my NICS check.

If I buy a firearm from a dealer at a gun show, he does the NICS check.

The only apparent "hole" in this system is a face-to-face private sale. I have spent lots of time trying to find some dependable data and it doesn't appear to exist about firearms from these private sales being used in mass murders, school shootings, shooting of law enforcement officials, etc. I must admit to being pro-gun and therefore biased, but where is the problem that expanded background checks are supposed to fix?

You make the same argument that I do. There is no gun show loophole or online sale loophole. The politicians on Capitol Hill are lobbying for things they know nothing about. Good thing this newest bill for Expanded Background checks just got shot down in the senate and will not go through to a final vote.

You are correct there is no loophole. They just want to limit guns. We need to be very careful because if the uneducated American masses keep listing to Chicago Jesus we are going to be in a world of hurt.

We need to keep contacting our reps asking them to vote no on this kind of stuff.

I believe the "loophole" they are talking about is you don't have to be an FFL to show or sell at the gun show. so a private individual can sell his collection to anyone there with out background checks without knowing the character of the individual. FTF transfer. Because of course only people of "questionable character" would attend a gun show. ;D bunch of BS

I believe the real reason for the change to include "expanded background checks" was shown in New York. It is now resulting the confiscation of firearms. Simply because a person has been treated sometime in their life for depression shows us a perfect example of a under handed scam by those who want to take away guns without taking away our 2nd amendment right. It wasn't about a loop hole in sales it was about determining another way to beat the constitution.

Your post has been my "talking point" for years. What gun show loophole? I'm so tired of the Liberals stating as a matter of fact that you can just go to a gun show and buy a weapon without a NICS. That's total BS. And now they've added online sales to it. The uninformed voter thinks you can just order a weapon via the internet and have it delivered to your door.
I'm just as annoyed that this was not better refuted, a simple explanation of the law such as your post would have gone a long way.
Yes, private sales do occur at gun shows...and on the parking lot at Wal Mart, at gun ranges, or wherever two folks want to meet up.

it's all about words...semi automatic rifle = " assult rifle "...high capacity mags.. as compaired to what ?...loop holes = private sale..we have sat back ..made no objection to the names the gun grabbers have hung on lawful items and processes..shame on us. in future these words have to be challenged from the 1st we hear them. if allowed to be common place words..the left vilifies and people pick up the use as commonplace and now we have assult rifles, loop holes, cop killer ammo and high capacity mags

And that works to their advantage in reverse too.

Terrorism = workplace violence
War on Terror = Overseas Contingency Operations

It's clear that the left are better " wordsmiths " than the right. it's also clear, that the left would eradicate all guns if the could. one thing I do know..they aren't going away just because of one minor setback..this is a long winner take all game.

Dave, I understand the so-called loophole you refer to but am not able to find any evidence of problems from it. I've been attending gun shows for 50 years, sold guns in the parking lot, bought guns in the parking lot, etc., but cannot identify any federal or state statistics showing that any of these "gun show sales" are causing a criminal problem.

None of the recent mass shootings they keep talking about had any connection to private sales or gun show sales, with or without background checks. I'm personally offended and sick in my heart of watching Obama dancing on the graves of the Newtown children in an attempt to get legislation passed that doesn't even address any of the real problems we face.

Massachusetts put out some info a few months ago in support of legislation to tighten up the Vermont gun laws (laxest in the country). They said 107 firearms used in Mass. crimes had been traced to Vt., but what they didn't say is that nearly all of those had been stolen in Vt. by Mass. criminals. If Mass. would keep their criminals home, that problem would be solved. But expanded background checks, registration, serialization -- any of the current proposals -- will have no effect whatsoever on reducing violent crime.

The Lanza kid murdered his own mother and stole her firearms because a gun shop refused to sell to him. If her guns had been registered (which I think they were under Conn. laws) it would not have stopped him from carrying out his heinous act.

Please keep pressure on your senators and representatives and talk to your friends who might be misinformed or not understand the truth. As Americans, we have an inbred notion to trust and believe our government and president. It even appears the president is so deluded that he believes if he says it, it is true. He spouts lies with emotion and carefully choreographed pauses, etc. The fact that he has twice been elected in this great country is an indictment of our right to vote.
