Jewell trigger repair

I've got a fair amout of spares for the Jewell's and get them up and running for people, when possible. On the models with a safety, the small articulating triangular lower lever can be broken when a primer is pierced. This lever isn't in the BR series triggers. See pic for the articulating lower lever.

Not trolling for 'business' but I'd be happy to take a look at it for you at no charge. If it's not fixable, the only charge will be return postage. If you want to go that way, don't take it apart...just send it as is.

Good shootin' :) -Al

Thank You AI. I may take you up on that but first i'll talk to my local gunsmith and see if he can do anything. Should know tommorow.

There are companies that do nothing but make springs. A sample could be supplied and cost quoted. It would be a quantity, they don't want to make 1 or 10. Another thing to consider might be patents held by the Jewell family. Then there is the cost to have parts made or to make them. I don't know why Jewell quit, they lost interest and had already filled their pockets, or the cost to manufacture? Many would like to have their Jewell Trigger repaired, but at what cost. Read through a thread on another forum, about O/U and S x S shotguns that had been deemed "not repairable", because no parts are available and the cost to make the need part is too high. If someone was to make Jewell Trigger repair parts, they might as well make the entire trigger!
Ithink a new trigger will hit the market within a year just over the jewell price point

Al, what are the parts made from. I always heard some type of hardened stainless and most were EDM cut.
If it came to it, I think I could make any of those pieces except a spring.
Jackie get busy! You're in for a deluge of work! You too Al. Good things happen when you can solve problems. ;)

A fellow member sent me a PM and, without any malice, figured that I do not have the type of equipment in my shop to make the type of parts found in a Jewel trigger.
He is 100% correct.
However, I am (was) acquainted with an elderly gentleman that was a clock collector with my Dad. He has, or had, a small CNC EDM machine that he used to make reproduction parts for antique clocks. Parts like gears and escapement parts. It seems that would be ideal.
Since he was kinda in between my Dad and me in age, that would make him in his late 80’s, if he is indeed still with us.
Does anybody know who was doing the parts for the Jewel Triggers?

I do not know, Jackie, however I know where there are four Mitsubishi wire machines looking for work. Problem is, have to run minimum 10 pcs and even then I don't know how cost effective we'll be.

p

Pattens expire. And if a company doesn’t have funding to keep a business going, probably don’t have the money to fight a lawsuit.
Who says they don't have the money to fight a law suit? As I said, maybe they already have their pockets full, or have no interest in the making trigger business, and are doing well in some other endeavor that's a darned sight more profitable than making triggers for niche market. Neither one of us knows the reason(s) the business closed, or if the Jewell family would contest. The only thing to do, without hiring a patent lawyer, would be to approach the family and ask!

It’s more than just that, the parts need reverse engineered, tool steel stock must be hardened and ground, then you need to decide whether you want the design to be wire burn friendly, or a better design that makes a stronger part. Which requires more work. If one decides to undertake a task like this, there is money in it. But you are not getting wealthy.

IIRC, the reason for going out of business was not being able to source parts. As far as making them and selling, I wouldn't want the liability. YMMV.
Yep, getting liability coverage would be an interesting exercise, and hold onto your pants re the price. Perhaps the had it and couldn't afford the cost, but maybe they did not and got down and out afraid of the consequences of a lawsuit. And on and on...all nothing but speculation.

I would ask forgiveness rather than permission this case
and if Jewell gets upset then tell them
"either back up your product... or let someone else do so"
I bet a judge with common sense would side with the consumers if it goes to any type of court
Just because someone sues ya, does not mean they get an immediate win
--------------
are there any cases of someone holding a patent and monopoly on a product
but then not putting out the product?
