JB Bore Paste

JB's great stuff, will clean up real dirty barrel as quick as anything. I've used it to break in factory barrel to help polish the bore on hunting rifles, it's a mild abrasive paste. I only use it on a custom barrel if it was badly carbon fouled.

I use it as well. I try to only use it when needed, though. In one of my rifles, it was the only thing that would cut the carbon.

I use it when accuracy drops off. Don't have a bore scope, so I can only go by what others say. A patch of carbon forms just in front of the chamber that solvents don't remove. JB effectively removes it and accuracy returns. I've performed this minor miracle 4 times now and I'm a believer.

it's the best and only way I know of to get the carbon build up out, and really bad copper fouling it helps with as well. be careful as I think there are two different types. one is for cleaning, and the other JB is a lapping type compound if I remember correctly. It has been a couple of years since I ordered it, which reminds me to get some more soon!

The most effective product I've used to remove carbon fouling. Have done dozens of before and after test's using my Hawkeye borescope, and it will remove the carbon. I give the bore a coating with JB (blue label) on a patch, followed by anywhere from 10 to 30 push strokes, chamber to muzzle with a snug fitting bronze brush. One dry patch, one wet patch with Hoppe's, let it soak for a few minutes, then 2 or 3 dry patches. Of course it also easily takes out the copper. And when breaking in a new barrel they seem to clean up faster. Butch's for normal cleaning, Warthog1134 for copper and light carbon, and JB for heavy carbon fouling. All my favorite products. IOSSO will also do much the same thing. :)

Last resort. Use with caution and sparingly. Flush your barrel thoroughly after use.

The best-shooting barrel I have cleans up with wet patches and nothing more. If I ever had a carbon problem I would use Carb-out and GM cleaner first.

Tim North of Broughton barrels cautions against use. Over-polish your bore and you can actually increase its propensity to copper foul, according to Tim.

And yes, I have personally witnessed a barrel lose accuracy after aggressive JB use.

Keep in mind that most good, hand-lapped barrels give best accuracy when they are near-new (200 rounds or less). And I would say the very best barrels I've ever seen shot superbly right from the start. Therefore ANYthing you do that changes the interior properties of the barrel is taking you in the wrong direction accuracy-wise.

If you are desperate about carbon, try plugging the bore and giving it a good soak with a non-ammonia carbon cleaner, followed by brushing in the affected area. Caution -- read the instructions on your solvent to ensure a long soak will not hurt the metal.

joesr of 6mmCM fame uses it every 3-400 rounds to (if I understood it right) smooth the edges of the throat erosion as it occured. He has reported accuracy far longer in a barrels life than just about anyone. You do have to be careful about getting it all out of your barrel though as it will keep working as long as it is in there.

+1 for Moderator. I've personnally messed up a barrel from an over aggressive cleaning routine using products like 40x, JB, and Isso. Matter of fact I'm a slow learner I've messed up two barrels from an over aggresive cleaning routine.

I have heard (have not confirmed) that some barrel makers will void their warranty if an abrasive paste has been used.

There is not a custom barrel maker, that I have found, (Krieger, Broughton, Hart, ect., ect.) that recommends the use of anyabrasive in their barrels. Use of abrasives will void any/all warranty on their custom barrel. Use it vigourously on factory barrels to help keep gunsmiths busy.

I use it after every 35 to 50 rounds [between yardages] on my Krieger Barrels. It does an excellent job. Here's what two very recognizable sources have to say about JB Bore Cleaning Compound:

"I personally believe in the use of JB Bore Cleaner... I use it after every yardage. 3 to 5 tight fitting patches with JB will get the powder fouling out... I do a full cleaning before I use JB and also after I use JB, to make certain I've got all the JB out of the barrel. ... Tony Boyer"

Krieger Barrels Inc,: Q&A

Q: Will a paste-type bore cleaner such as J.B. hurt a barrel during cleaning?

A: No. There is nothing that we can find that shows that it will harm the barrel provided you use a rod guide and refrain from exiting the muzzle.

Instructions received from Krieger along with my Krieger barrel: Break-In and Cleaning, Under Cleaning:

"Abrasive cleaners work well. They do not damage the bore, they clean all types of fouling (copper, powder, lead, plastic), and they have the added advantage of of polishing the throat both in 'break in' and later on when the throat begins to roughen again from the rounds fired. One national champion we know polishes the throats on his rifles every several hundred rounds or so with diamond paste to extend their accuracy life."

That's funny, LOL
I have used it on factory barrels to remove stubborn carbon, I have never needed to use it on a custom barrel. Good quality patches and a quality brush w/butches seems to work fine, and I only use a brush in the throat area when carbon becomes a issue.

To the contrary. This directly from Krieger:

Most abrasive cleaners work very well. And MOST do not damage the bore, they clean all types of fouling (copper powder, lead, plastic), and they have the added advantage of polishing the throat both in "break in" and later on when the throat begins to roughen again from the rounds fired.

I use Iosso at the end of every match ~ 50 rounds. I never had an issue either. If it removes metal it would be tough to explain how those 30 BR's using Iosso/ JB in their cleaning regimen continue to agg well enough to win matches with + 3000 rounds down the tube.
Voiding warranty? Well I guess I'm screwed on this anyway because I REFUSE to remove the brush each trip down the bore ( as some of them recommend)....and I insist on BRONZE brushes.
Why don't these bbl. makers just ban cleaning rods also because more bores get damaged through abrasives due to the fact that MOST people don't continually wipe off the rod or use a proper guide/rod combination.

The recommendations of Tony Boyer, Krieger and others are good enough for me, backed up with what I see with my borescope. I have several barrels with well over 3000 rounds fired, all have seen many careful cleanings with JB, continue to shoot groups comparable to when they were new, and show no sign of any type of damage. Several have even been set-back and re-chambered and continue to shoot extremely well. One of our local well known rifle builders, and big time winner in benchrest competition does not hesitate to use IOSSO. He made me aware of it years ago, again with the aid of a borescope. For those who are afraid to use JB and/or IOSSO, a simple solution: do not use it!
