I've kinda grown tired.....

Evergreen Air, thought they went under? Sounds oddly familiar. Great shooting as well. I am impressed when I see fine shooting like this. It must be nice to have a wind lane like tall corn to shoot in too. Where I shoot we have a lane carved out of second growth pine that about 25 feet tall now. That protects pretty good too.

No......Evergreen Flying Service, Inc. is nowhere near going under! But I know the one you're speaking of! Only time there is a wall of corn is right now...and there's none further down to the west so the wind still blows! ;D ;)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the .308 a bastid child of the 30.06? It was picked by the Military as easier to load (less powder) with 'sufficient' ballistics to do the intended job.

Here's a 30-06 I finally finished
It's a 1903 Sniper clone. It all started when a customer gave me a Unertl scope with broken cross hairs.
Mr. parson's fixed it before he passed.
I bought a 1903 sporter and took it all apartsaving just the reciver, bolt and trigger.
Bought a C-stock from the CMP and searched around for all period correct pats to put it together with.
It came out right nice :-)

Guys after reading the post on this thread, it makes me want to slap myself. After thinking to put my 30-06 build up for sale because of all the hype of smaller more accurate cartridges. But ill take the recoil if my 30-06 can shoot like RMulhern's workhorse.

Rick, Saw your mention of your front rest, had to laugh but to tell you the truth I dont see one thing wrong with what you got-- Pipe and Roll-- Whole idea is for it to work. With those groups on the steele looks like it is working just fine.

Buddy of mine up in Michaigan made me these two rest's shown here. One for F-Class and one for my Benchrest Shooting. Name is Bob Pastor one hell of a fine friend and craftsman. I realize you are not interested in shooting competition any longer but when you feel the need drop me a note and I will you hook you two up. I also had a Caldwell rest. I did find a good use for that thing, It's holding down my "TrotLine" in Lake Guntersville, it's the only thing I found it good for.

Recoil with this rifle isn't bad whatsoever; it's not a 'fly-weight' by any means nor is it a 20+ pounder like some use for the ELR shooting. I'm no fly-weight either at 6' and 222# so either I'm just punch-drunk from shooting heavy recoiling rifles all my life or I'm just too dumb to know what's going on! ;D :o I know what you mean Eric about the smaller caliber rifles; got one I had made up a couple years back and I have really enjoyed shooting some fabulous groups with it all the way back to 1300 yards. Basically I had the rifle made up to expose my grandkids to the finer art of LR shooting and the upper three kids have done real well shooting it. They're probably the only kids at their private school that can say truthfully that they can hit a 1 gal. milk jug from 1000 yards. I started them shooting prone off the bipod and when all age a bit I'll have them shooting an NRA Match Rifle from a sling supported position. Guys...I can't stress this enough but the fact of the matter is that if WE do not take the time to expose and teach our off-spring the finer rules of marksmanship...this shooting game that all of us love will eventually be no more. Rifle 'cranks' are born at home; normally as in the past by a Dad that was a 'crank' himself and such was my case! My Dad, God rest his soul turned me into one when I was ten years old when he presented me with an almost brand new 03A3 Springfield. The deal was he'd buy all the powder/bullets/primers that I could shoot up...PROVIDED the work on the farm got done FIRST!! He and I spent many hours together in a little loading room we had and there is no telling how many cast bullets I shot through that rifle with never any leading problem. Dad taught me how to cast bullets and with several friends that worked with the telephone company...there was always a good supply of lead sheathing that I melted down. I was taught to never load at a velocity over 1500 fps and with the proper application of a gas check to the base of the bullet that leading wouldn't be a problem...and it never was!

For the past 18 years or so I have allocated a lot of my shooting time to Sharps rifles, specifically the M1874 as made by Shiloh Rifles up in Big Timber, Montana. I think I have about burned myself out on that discipline for a bit so I made the decision a while back to revisit this 'Ole Warhorse' 30/06 and man....it has been a real pleasure! German Salazar's articles I think started it all as he also apparently thinks highly of the '06. I've ordered various brands/weights of bullets and when these arrive I'll start reloading and doing some more testing. I've also ordered me a new trigger for the rifle and am strongly thinking of ordering a good target stock from McMillan. I've got an A-5 on my 6.5x47L and I'm thinking that's gonna be the right cradle for this '06 also!

Stay tuned! ;D :)

That sounds like a great time growing up, i have a little girl on the way and i plan on teaching her everything i know and hope she keeps shooting alive in the family. Its funny how no one esle in my family ever did any type of shooting, but some how i just gravitated myself towards it. But i am thinking that the 30-06 is going to be something special now.

I just had a great opportunity to shoot an old friend of mine's match service rifle, M1 Garand .30-06.
He said that the last time he shot the rifle was back in the mid 80's. After getting sighted in for 100 yards I was able to put 4 out of five right in the X ring in one hole that was round and ragged, prone with a sling and NM sights, with FA59 match ammo.
I was IMPRESSED!

Started with an '06 and will never give it up!

Interesting true story. When I was young, I used to go to Alaska a lot. In those days, 60s, there were a lot of old timers around that remembered all the way back to the gold rush days. One of them recounted how the 3rd largest (at that time) Brown Bear was taken. Eighty yards with a single neck shot, 220gr 30-06, peep sight. Bear never moved. I used the same combo for many years. The best 220 gr. was a Rem. 220 Corelokt open point.
Thought a bearman would appreciate the story.

I have 3 30-06s and love them all!

I can't see your target pictures but I'll take everyone's word for it and say, "Great shooting!" ;D

I hate the 06, yep I said it. ::) I owned exactly 1, sold it to my boss for his kid, and he loves it, which is good, because it is a shooter! I live here in Alaska, and when someone asks me what rifle they should get, I will, with no hesitation say 30/06. Great round for the north, you can pick up ammo on any village, and any one who has seen the villages here know what I am talking about. Yep, the 06 is not for me, takes all the fun out of loosing your 358 Norma ammo. Keep her alive! The 06 is,"THE" round all are compared against, and that is the way its supposed to be.
