It's that time of year again. Let's see those big and small game kills of the '18-19 season.

First one of the year for me, not a trophy, a doe with the muzzleloader. Will yield some nice roasts, chip steak and lebanon bologna. :)
A couple sayings I like.

There are two kinds of people: Those that believe what other people want them to believe and people those that use the brain God gave them and common sense

Lead, follow or get out of the way (George Patton).

Always like that one. I visited the Cemetery in 2011 where he is buried when I was competing in the World SR Match near there. We visited the Hamm Cemetery in Luxembourg early one morning after the match. Foggy, very erie....Patton was buried on top of the hill overlooking his troops below. The Cemetery was manicured better than any golf course I've ever been at.

Awesome experience. Very humbling.

RIP Brave Men

I'm back for another season of squirrel hunting. It's still pretty warm here in central Ohio. The mosquitos are really bad. I usually like to wait until there's one good hard frost before I go out. But I've been out a few times already. We had a mild last winter, and I think there's a lot of squirrels this year. However, that could just the fact that I'm out early before everyone kills them off. And speaking of 'everyone'....I went out on opening day and I don't think I'll ever do that again on public land. People everywhere. I hunt a lot at a 'wildlife area'. It's only 30 minutes from Columbus, OH...and parking lots were jammed on opening day. I managed to find a secluded spot, but it sounded like a soundtrack to a war movie. Guns going off every 20-30 seconds. It's a popular place.

And I've run across a few other hunters that are covered head to toe in full camo. Hat to boots...and even camo face masks. C'mon guys, it's just squirrels. Patience and your ability to remain motionless are far more important than camo. And not ONE bit of orange. Like I said, a very popular area, and these guys have NO orange. No, it's not required by the laws of the state. But I think it would be required by the laws of common sense. If you KNOW there are 15 trucks back in the parking lot...put on some orange.

Got my first one. I've tried 'calling', and sometimes they hear it...and run off. But this one heard it, and came close to investigate. The fox squirrels here are so big, I use #4 shot and a full choke. I know others use #6 with modified. That may be good for grey squirrels, but these big fox need some extra thump.

First time out calling this year a couple days ago. I wanted to get a New Sako 30BR loaded with TGK 125gr off to a good start. First shot fired at a coyote is the coyote you see in the picture, hit him low on a close running shot, later that morning added two more but they were across a canyon that was loaded with Cat Claw and Tamerack bushes, no pic. I’ll use the 30BR for another month or so and then switch to something a bit more fur friendly. Makes a heck of a thump when that bullet hits center mass. I’ve been wanting to try that cartridge out on Yotes for a couple years now.
