It's Always New To Somebody

Hey guy's I do agree with yawl, on the reasons for using the search engines on the forum. My point is just a little different when it comes to the new gun owner/Reloaders. I see to many new gun owners on the range every day, and they are clueless about all of it. So get ready, it's going to get worse in the area of head scratching questions,,, their headed this way. I am the new kid here posting also, and I'm not here to step on any toes, just learn and help. I have been reading this forum for a many of years and just found the time to get into really posting over on another forum. I was banned for my political views and for posting such info on what was happening here in Ga. in the last senate elections. Yes I broke Len's rules, am I mad No, Disappointed, only in my self. So get ready, their are a lot of us that just got censored and banded, and their headed this way too. I just plan on sticking to reloading here and keep my political views over on the NRA/GOA sites. Just a few thoughts and reflections. Over the last several years I see many of the names of long time benchrest shooters whom often answered questions with advice gained from years of competitive experience dwindle in number. Several who I know told me they became frustrated with some of the responses they recieved. I understand. If asking advice evaluate it, try it, then give an intelligence response. Don't just start refuting it because it's not the answer you hoped to receive. There is a large influx of shooters from disciplines that have different accuracy requirements then benchrest. It would be a huge help if the OPs mentioned the discipline they are interested in and what equipment they have.I also get the sense people are giving advice based on what they have read or heard, not what they have done. Might be better to be quiet and see if someone with actual experience related to the question answers, you might learn something. The experienced shooters also need to realize not everyone can jump into the shooting games and invest thousands and thousands of dollars into it immediately. Many need to test the waters with what it's about.. Most want a fun hobby and might like to compete a bit but are not looking to travel the country in quest of a Shooter of the Year Award, or whatever. Those who choose not to put a little effort out and try the search function are missing out on a ton of good information and interesting reading. Let's stay civil with each other, only give advice on what we have tried, and respect that sometime there is more than one way to skin the cat.I will try to follow my own advice.

So when beating a horse to death, what makes for the best club?
Golf club, baseball bat, 2x4?
Asking for a friend.
I think a bat will do best, but 3 whacks with a bat isn't enough to tell if the horse is dead yet. 5 whacks really isn't either. Ideally everyone would use 9 whacks to have any hope of statistical relevance before coming to a conclusion about just how dead that horse is. :p

To the topic of this thread:
Posting that someone should "use the search function" doesn't help or change anybody's habits. Sometimes the person asking a question doesn't even have enough of a knowledge base to know what to search for. It's not like the forum has a sophisticated "ask siri" like search function where you can say "hey siri, which has won more competitions: a 6 Dasher or a 6 BRA?" or "Hey siri, will a concentricity gauge fix my bad groups?" or "hey siri, what is more important: buying better dies or a better press?" I tried those questions just now and none of them really work with our search function, even removing words and punctuation. I couldn't find an answer quickly, even though I know all of those questions have been discussed before on here and I've been around this place for quite a while.

I have frequently clicked on a thread and felt agitated by what was being discussed. Instead of posting something, I just clicked away. A few times I was even half way through writing a response that was not positive or encouraging when Momma's voice popped into my head: if you don't have anything nice or productive to say...

Saw another "reply" today that all but scolded a poster for asking a question.

What's the harm with someone asking something that may have been asked many times before? Do sites really only want to deal with "new topics"?

Kinda a bummer to bring a question and then get replies like "here we go again", or "are we going to keep beating this dead horse?".

Just my opinion. Apologies to those who think that such a topic has been referenced too many times.
Temperatures are a little short these days. Given what happened recently, it will take some time to calm down. Please pardon that. This forum is a great place. Ask any question you can think of and we’ll usually answer politely. The search function is a good start to find the volumes of info buried here but a lot of times I like a question I can answer. It takes me back to when I was a newbie on these fine points. Let ‘er rip!

A member has to know that a search function exists. Some might not.I have used the search and did not get what I was looking for. Sh-t happens. We have to stick together on this forum. If you can`t help someone that has a question, then zip it. Next MAN up will help. We only go forward if we help each other. Now I will pass the collection plate and see you all next sermon. Rev. Don't feel intimidated to asks a question even if it's been asked before many times. Hopefully forums such as these are intended to present different ideas and opinions of issue for which there is no absolute answer.

There are issues, such a cleaning rifle bores, that can initiate a preponderance of opinions and procedures since there is no absolute answer. To prove my point, just for fun do a internet search on YouTube and watch the various videos of rifle cleaning. I watched about 20 or so of these, some by renowned shooters, that vary widely in approach. For example, one such source claims that its not necessary to clean a rifle bore at all since he is able to maintain competitive rifle accuracy at a 600 round count without cleaning. Another claims only to use mineral spirits to clean a bore and that copper solvents are not only not needed but can harm the bore and degrade accuracy and makes a compelling scientific case. Who's right? I don't know.

It's up to the reader to sort through the various opinions and adopt those practices that make sense to you.

I thinks some of the negative responses to posts pertaining to these repetitive issues is the frustration that opinions vary so vastly and there is no absolute proof positive answer.

The only person who should attempt to chastise anyone on this forum is the Forum Administrator. Asking a question that has been asked before without doing a search, hurts no one. See a question that is redundant, ignore it if it upsets you. Don't be a pompous ass. If you can't help a person, do nothing.

Like driving down the road and someone cuts you off and then you chase after them, honking your horn and giving them the finger. What have you accomplished?

Most here really like to offer advice and are always willing to field a question, no matter how many times it has been asked. Just maybe, the poster did not get a satisfactory answer when he did a search or did not understand it.

Parson48,
You hit the nail on the head with the title "Its always new to somebody"! How many people do you think are reading threads right now that are afraid to speak up with their experiences due to their limited knowledge. I brought this up in a different thread about how i have a job that changes everyday and just because you are the old guy does not mean that you know everything. Yes, you have knowledge to pass and pass you should, but new members bring something to the table as well! If you think you have all the answer to all the questions, then why are you here? You dont need us! This is the third time in a few day that I have heard(not experienced of people acting this way. I am totally with the Boss on this one! Kick them off! Its not needed here!
Parson48, please do not get bummed, there are a lot of really great people on the site. Please dont let the few speak for the group.
To all new people, please do not stop asking question! No matter if you just read a thread about the exact same question. Obviously you are asking for a reason. Most likely because you still may not fully understand what was said and would lik1 someone to clear it up for you. Nothing wrong with that!
For those treating people poorly, LEAVE!
Rob
