It Happened to Me -- Insurance

You need to contact an insurance broker, not an agent.
Lay out with the broker what business your in, and they can get access to all kinds of insurance companies and get you a quote.

I was looking into opening a gunshop/fabrication shop the other year. Got in touch with a broker.
His quote for such a business was actually cheaper by 10 fold over what i was expecting.

Guess I better call them to find out how they will handling my firearms insurance from this moment forward....
State Farm will cover up to $5k on firearms ( I think, that is the amount, can't remember) If you want more than that you can buy a personal articles policy.. Its not too $$$ per firearm. Also, NRA has a company that writes policies. About the same $$ when I checked.. But do your homework / research.. Agents and the company are not your friend (Like a good neighbor, BS) Been there..

I tried to get a quote for my house and cars from state farm about 4 years ago. In the process I mentioned I had a gun shop on site. I was told they could not insure me and that was that.
It's hard to know if the problem was insuring a commercial venture from a residential property. I've been told that it can be difficult and expensive to get insurance for a business where you will have customers coming to your home, regardless of what the business is.

My wife's brothers are all on USAA and only one of them was ever in the military. Her dad was lead navigator for the 303rd bomb group in WWII so USAA accepted his dependents, but they all applied while he was still alive. My understanding is that their policy regarding officers only has changed, but we currently use Allstate with better coverage and rates than we have been quoted from any other insurance company we've contacted including USAA.

I have Erie. I have for a long time, but no business or manufacturing stuff, only car & home. I have to say the agent did know my family, etc. growing up. When I called him after moving back to VA, he did warn me the homeowners policy only covered a certain amount on firearms. He said, I know you, you should probably get the additional insurance. It was simple, give them the amount you want covered, added a few other things to it as well. They didn't have a care at all covering firearms, even recommended it. If they ever do I am gone.

Not surprised at anybody having problems with SF. Live out in the country. Been covered by State Farm for over 50 years.
Had a walk by home inspection. Was told that they were going to cancel my homeowners because the house needed painting and I didn't paint it by a specific time?? At the time it was 35 degrees and had been raining for 5 days straight. Paint won't dry under 45".
Have NEVER filed a claim since I've been covered by them.
Told them to go ahead and cancel my homeowners policy and while they were at it, cancel my 3 car's policy as well as my life policy. I also told them that my sister, both of my kids and my folks would ALL be canceling their policies also. And any body else that I knew.
Funny thing? They changed their mind real fast and said everything was good to go. I guess the CC letter that I wrote to the Insurance Commissioner may have also had something to do with their decision?
They were trying to dump the fire Ins policies cause they had their asses handed to them three years in a row from the Nor Cal fires. Couldn't have happened to a better company.
Don't trust them any further than you can throw them!!! Money talks and BS walks!!

The only reason I'am still with SF Ins because SIL who is an Ins. broker says I won't find the discounts at any other Ins. Co. because I've been with SF for so long.
As far as our SF agent? Worthless!! Only time I've seen him is when I told SF to STUFF IT and I jumped his S**T for not saying something BEFORE it went as far as it did. Loves getting the premiums while sitting on his butt and doing nothing. You know DAMN WELL the notice had crossed his desk and he didn't say JACK?? . Like I said, WORTHLESS!!
One more nail in their coffin? Picked up a 38 Chevy street rod. Figured I'd get it insured thru SF like the rest of my cars. Was told it would have to be insured at the same rate as my other vehicles? The 38 gets driven maybe 200 miles a year so it should be rated different?
Showed them the car, took pictures and was told to come back after 6 months to get it re rated? 6 months went by, no pictures to be found and they didn't know anything about it. WTF???
One call to an Ins. Co. that covers rods, pictures sent and I got a bill for $105.00 for 6 months ,full coverage with a loss value of $30K. State Farm sucks, BIG TIME!!

I'll add that SF is more expensive than others but, lost a windshield when out of town. SF said get it fixed and have them call me. Same when I tagged a deer about 1/4 mile from home. SF says get an estimate. Told them that it was going to (our) body shop. I just happened to work for an Auto Repair/Body Shop/AAA Towing business and they have a direct like to SF. Even got my deductible covered. You get what you pay for.

Anybody check with an independent agent? They can search a number of different insurers. This is only the tip of the ice berg as gun owners. We are the canary in the coal mine as far as the loss of liberty goes.

Have been with SF since 1978, which also includes firearm and jewelry riders. About 3yrs ago asked the broker (very pro 2A) who handles our lake property policy to find competitive coverage and we'd switch. He not only couldn't compete, he told me best he could do would cost us $1k more per year. His advice to me - stick with what you've got.

Being retired USAF I could switch to USAA, but SF has been good, paid out three times in 42yrs without question or cancellation, so I'm standing pat.

Can you tell me how to get USAA to sell me insurance?
Available to US service men/women and dependents.
If you served your children are eligible.

Butch I've worked in body shops for 30+ years, by far the best company.
It's my belief the rest are "legal" organized crime syndicates. Your forced to pay the vig/ premium every month, but be damned you actually have to file a claim.
I can go on for hours, but I wont.

Your experience matches mine while working in collision field. Never had a complaint with SF adjusters, others, some really popular big names, just the opposite and had to fight every step of the way.

IIRC, I think with SF, if you want more firearms coverage, you have to give complete descriptions of every firearm plus S/N, that you want insured.

My Father was career Air Force, my one Son was career Air Force, my Brother was Army, my Brother in Law was career Air Force. All have USAA except my deceased father. As an enlisted man in those days they only accepted officers only. He had to go to the old Government Employees Insurance Co.
I am not qualified!
I was told its any family of a former military personnel. Matt

We went shopping for insurance for my company owned truck. State Farm declined to quote it. After pressing them as to why, we were told they don't do business with anyone in THAT industry.
Where you ever military or do you have family that is? If so, look to USAA who will NEVER take such a contemptible stance.

F*ck State Farm.

Hes trying to insure a truck, not a business. The truck belongs to the business
"We went shopping for insurance for my company owned truck. State Farm declined to quote it. After pressing them as to why, we were told they don't do business with anyone in THAT industry."

The truck belongs to the business as a part of that business therefore it falls into the same basic framework of insuring a business under the business policy. He is not insuring a stand alone truck for personal use. State Farm does not insure manufacturing businesses. It's pretty simple.

This is kind of what I found out today.
I dont have the complete run down yet.
If truck is multi purpose personal/work it should be insurable.
If solely for business of a manufacturing company it's not.

I inquired about being a
gunsmith/ machine shop. SF will not insure a machine shop either due to liability issues, worried about getting sued over faulty product being manufactured.

I'll find out more tomorrow as I got 2 agents in my office curious.
I was also told I'm good as I just paint stocks.
This has been very informative.
