Is there anyway to ship powder??????????????

All your online powder/primer stores are 'certified haz mat shippers'
they have certain employees in their shipping dept that are 'haz mat certifed'......they are the ones that pack the haz mat orders...yes...certain amounts of primers & powder may be packed/shipped in same carton...thus saving you money on the haz mat fees...To my knowledge..UPS or Fed Ex customer service counters have no trained/certified haz mat employees that will accept & ship from Joe Blow off the street..the same goes for storefront UPS...IE...'UPS Stores'....UPS/Fed EX only accept pkg's from their certified haz mat shippers...lots of extra paperwork....inspections..etc...that's the reason for the surcharge of $27...in today's world...haz mat items in either UPS or Fed Ex are closely watched & regulated...drivers for these companies also have special loading and delivery requirements for haz mat...if stopped by DOT onroad..you'd better have the 5 part label available and know where that box is on your truck....I recently retired from UPS in 2011 after 27 yrs driving....hope this helps...

DogBuster: With all the regulations that are involved with Hazmat shipping, since shipping was your background, can you explain to me how a recent powder shipment from a very large retailer, with the package clearly marked "Adult signature required", can be left on my front porch, without a signature?

The first I knew of the shipment arrival was when I opened the front door to walk across the street to the usps mail box, and there it was laying on the porch floor, in clear view of the street. Thanks.

If for some reason.....the 'Signature Required' is/was not 'built into the barcode' of UPS/Fed Ex...the driver will simply Driver Release (DR) the pkg in hopefully a safe location...also another way its done...is whats called a 'DNS' (Delivery Note Signed) this info is keypunched into UPS DIAD with receiver's last name...IF the driver has this DNS in possession....then its kept on file at UPS...normal UPS boxes are normally 'DR'd' at the drivers discretion....apartments...unsafe neighborhoods....etc...are an exception...firearms...drugs...expensive products are 'normally' tagged 'Adult Signature Required'...for example...even a 5# carton from '2100 Roosevelt Ave' Springfield MA attracts attention to the driver knowing what it is...make a safe delivery ! Weapon pkg's are very common in either UPS/Fed Ex...drivers know what the boxes look like...at least I did !

A few years ago I was waiting for my new Palma rifle's barreled action to be delivered. Got the tracking number from the gunsmith (John Whidden) & was excited the morning "out for delivery" appeared.

I was home that day, all day. I knew the regular driver's schedule pretty reliably.

Nothing.

After a couple hours' nail-biting I set a chair in my driveway, cell phone in hand when up to my yard gate walks two fellows, one carrying a long cardboard box.

They seemed a little hesitant as we'd had words once over some noisy behavior at 3 AM a few days after they'd moved in.

Turns out the UPS driver was a sub that day, delivered my parcel next door....

Address was 100% correct & readable. Mailbox out front has house number on the front. Sign next to front door has house number clearly visible 24/7/365.

All I can say is: s#i+ happens at the worst possible times.

Yept...as in everything.....schidt happens.......

Even with my 27 yrs as a UPS driver....

I made a mistake.........or two.....in my early years........

;D

I do hazmat/DG shipping for a living, I'm registered with DOT and I teach classes to my companies employees.

The short answer is NO.

In order to ship Hazmat/dangerous goods you must be trained, whether it is the requirements of 172 Subpart H (which is the actual enforceable requirement) or IATA 1.5.0 you must be trained in order to ship Hazmat, and if you are asking the question then you are not.

I'll probably get hammered for it but...............if you're talking about sending a one pound container to someone just tape it SECURELY, package it SECURELY with sufficient cushioning and send it Priority Mail.

Sure, it's against the rules but so is speeding, fudging on your tax write-offs and calling in sick for a mental health day.

I don't see an inherent danger in a sealed package of powder with no possible ignition source.

I imagine that the guy who put the oxygen generators in the hold thought the same thing. It was undeclared Hazmat that caused ValueJet 592 to auger into the everglades and killed all 110 people onboard. Going 10 MPH over the speedlimit or fudging your charitable donations a couple of hundred on your 1040 isn't even in the same universe.

Yours is not the only package being shipped. If there is a problem with something else, say orgainic peroxide leaks, or if the first responders are onscene for a brake fire on the truck, then you have a different problem. That package breaks open or has a problem you are facing fines, someone gets hurt and you are facing jail time. (and that felony conviction will end you ever needing to worry about reloading.) Shipping hazmat in a manner in which the people handling it don't know what it is puts them in danger.

If your ducks are not in a row you really don't want that visit from the special investigator from the FAA, seriously.

XTR is absolutely right on both of his post. Having worked in the transportation business for more years than I care to disclose I understand how serious the DOT takes the proper handling of hazardous materials. All persons handling hazmat must have both training, certification and re certification every few years. The packing or containers must meet a certain standard. The containers must be properly identified. The paper work has to be made out in a certain way. The truck has to be placarded in order to identify the hazmat being shipped. Certain hazmat cannot be shipped with other hazmat. The driver has to carry the paper work in a certain place in the cab. The drivers have to be fingerprinted and undergo an FBI back round check. I am only scratching the surface on the numerous rules and regulations involving the proper handling and shipping of hazmat. It's just not worth taking a chance considering the consequences if something goes wrong. Ray

Yeah, I don't think I'd do that for $25 worth of powder.
