is rat shot effective

After its over with the shovel, I then wish I hadn’t done it. Usually pull a muscle somewhere or get some kind of ache out of the deal. The shovel handle seems pretty short when you get down to business.
I have one with a really long fiberglass handle. I should put notches in it for all the snakes it’s killed, lol

A search came up when out of stock from Speer. There were a couple of obscure online places that were showing in stock on the 38/357 one’s.

I've still got a stash of my CCI shot handloads, but ask if anyone knows it they still offer the empty capsules for handloading .38 & .44. Anyone?

Never mind...sorry. Upon searching the wondernet, I see there are more than a few still offering these little gems. Better stock up now while they're still out there in the wild.

May I ask what you found, and where.?
Thank you.!

Make your own. Lube your shot and clean your bore. While I've not had much trouble *yet* with leading they say a little bit of copper choreboy does wonders to clean. I load anything and everything except salt in my 38s and 410. I have magtech 410 brass. I like the capsules but rarely are they instock anywhere I trust so I roll my own now. Rice for carpenter bees, wasps and the like will dent wood if you are too close.

Double Tap has some new snake loads in 41mag,45LC,44mag, 500SW mag, among other calibers. Saw Guns &Gear cable show. Had segment shooting into ballistic gelatin. No shot wad but light bullet with several hundred #9 shot pellets.
CCI has some in 44mag...#4 shot if I remember correctly, I have some for my 4" Taurus.

A friend gave me about 100 lbs of fork lift ballast which is about like #12 shot. I loaded that into 38 shot capsules. It’s extremely effective out of a short barreled 38/357 on rats.

Someone i knew said he used to make them with gas checks and #12 shot in 38 special cases.

Gas check on top and bottom of the shot, crimped on top.

Why not #9, 10 or 11?
One source

I've read some people roll their own by using a gas check top & bottom and crimp. To avoid leading I'm wondering if this could be used after cutting to size. Mylar wraps

I have used Speer shot capsules with 9 shot in a .357 S&W 19 with a 4" barrel on rats. Very effective.

If you're serious about shooting rats with .22 shotshells, find one of the pump action Remington .22 shotguns. I have one and it will kill rats at a surprising distance (for a .22). When I was a kid I'd knock them off the barn wall from 10 yards or so. You must shoot the crimped shells due to the tube mag though.

I have a cheap .22 revolver I bought just to shoot carpenter bees with 22 shot.
