Is it ok to grind a ring ?

granite, the rings are not backwards, they have an offset which can be used in front or rear position with the offset either forward or rearward. They are a very handy solution to scope mounting especially with the newer scopes with both limited eye relief and small scope eyeboxes. Lots of the new scopes have two short sections of tube for mounting rings further causing mounting limits. Other than a pic rail, it looks like the OP may have to make do with the scope a little more forward than he likes. Or find another scope that will fit. Some manufacturers give detailed dimensions on their website, but without the scope in hand to test eye relief it doesn't help in some situations. If Weaver makes an extended BASE for the 788, that would fix the problem by moving the rear ring back about 3/4 to 1 inch.

Frank, did you look at the pictures? If that is where he is positioning the scope to get the eye relief he wants, then they are backwards.
