Is H4350 gone forever?

Our local chain sporting goods store here has two shelves about 30 feet long of differing powders, was in the store yesterday. Huge variety, 1 pound jars and the big jugs. Northern Utah

I've been researching powders for my 6.5CM, and the one that seems to always be at the top of the list is H4350. Only problem is that I am starting to see what everyone has been talking about regarding availability. If this powder is so great, and the demand is so high, why isn't Hodgdon making more of it?

I would swear that I have seen 8-lb containers of this stuff somewhere, but I can't for the life of me remember where. Is it really so scarce that I should buy every last lb that I can find, and then sell it on ebay for my retirement?
Hodgdon DO NOT, NEVER HAVE made ANY powder. They simply buy it, package it and label it to their nomenclature.
As an example, H4350 is in fact made here in Australia by Thales/ADI and is actually called/known as AR 2209. Varget is AR 2208, H1000 is AR 2217, H4831sc is AR 2213sc and the list goes on. Retumbo is one of the newest powders developed and is called AR 2225, it had no lace to ‘slot’ in so it had to have the extra numbers applied.
Thales/ADI make powders used/sold by Hodgdon ranging from Universal to H50BMG.
ADI used to make a powder only available here known as AR 2214, it was only slightly slower than H50BMG, a couple of points slower than Retumbo and was AWESOME in everything ‘belted’. I used it in 300WM, 270Bee, 257Bee and 7STW, it was more than 100fps faster across the board in all cases over 7828, which was the slowest US made powder available here at the time.

Cheers.

A bit off topic - but Thales military website shows AR2210 as the Aussie military powder for 5.56. Any ideas if it will ever be available ( i'm in NZ). Yeah - I miss 2214 too. Apparently made for a canon shell, no longer produced or reformulated to 2217. ( you didn't think that it was made just for us civilians, did you?).

My guess that IMR 7828 is Ar2217 too.

Best of luck with 4350 - plenty here in NZ!

6.5 Creedmore - plenty of data on Reloader 26 being a good powder too ( haven't tried it yet). Odd numbering system - it's around 2213sc burn rate, but a very dense powder. Made in Switzerland as S62 (geddit?)

NZ FClass,
2214 was developed for 20mm cannon shells and the surplus for that contract was made available for general sale.
I worked in the ADI plant for a couple of years in the 90’s, when the powder selections were limited. I finished up there just before they had the first (small in comparison) of the fires that eventually ceased production for some time.

I am quite certain that IMR 7828 is NOT made at Thales/ADI, if it was, I would have known about it years ago. 2217 is 2217, no other company utilises it other than Hodgdon as far as I know.

I am not sure 100%, but I think AR 2210 is also marketed as BenchMark8208. It is slightly slower than Bench Mark 2, which happens to be a favourite of mine in 22-250 and 22-250 AI.
I can enquire and see if that is the case.

Cheers.

Well that’s certainly confusing me, what with Hodgdon’s Benchmark sold here being very close to what they also sell as IMR8208.

I used the latter for several seasons in Palma loads after it first appeared, only moving to the former after it was recommended to me by another fine Palma Team member. More readily available, slightly better (as in less) vertical dispersion at 1,000 yards, what’s not to like?

Grafs has it in stock. Great price and some of the best customer service. Powder Valley also has it in stock. Otherwise, as others have mentioned, R17 is an excellent alternative. My H4350 and R17 260 Remington loads are identical.

So, it sounds like the H4350 panic is no longer an issue. I just didn't look hard enough to find it. I still don't even know if it is the powder I will end up using, but it is definitely on my short list. What would be really nice is if someone would sell sampler sets, so you can try out four different powders without having to buy 16 oz of each. Wishful thinking.

Interesting idea! Wonder if any of the powder companies monitor this forum:cool:?

Never thought about that, but just in case, I'll elaborate. Brushing 6.5CM powders aside for the moment, I have been researching powders for my .223 extensively. Lots of good info from reloaders all over the internet, but it is almost impossible to make a selection based on someone else's rifle. Here is what I was thinking. Let's just say, for example, that Hodgden released a 4-pack sampler at 4 oz. each with H335, Varget, CFE223, and H4895. Assuming a reasonable price (say . . . a 50% markup of what the most expensive of those powders would cost at 16 oz.), I would buy it in a heartbeat, without even considering other manufacturers for load testing. Hope you're listening Hodgden. ;)

There you go. Make me a offer
