Is FFP the new 6.5 Creed?

Yeah in 1997 when Remington introduced the .260 Rem they definitely dropped the ball with no factory match ammo or rifles with faster twists to use heavier bullets. Kind of had to go the custom route. You could use lighter hunting bullets though for that game. If they came at it right then it might have been a different story.

I have been shooting a 260 Remington for about thirty years now. I am still waiting for somebody to show me the real world advantage of the creedmore...

The ONLY advantage I see in the 6.5 Creed is the shoulder angle. You'll trim your brass a BIT less often...That's IT IMHO. Like you I've been shooting the 260 for decades.

For you there probably isn't any but for someone getting into long range shooting you get many rifles, ammo and a round that will easily fit in magazines even with heavier bullets. Ballistically they are almost the same. Lots of brass available for the Creedmoor with no need to size down. Just small things that appeal to some.
Here's the advantages.

Or the SAMMI spec chamber that has a tighter free-bore and the faster twist.

If you want an off the shelf rifle that performs with factory ammo, the Creedmoor has a leg up. Also, I’ve had more than one .260 Remington that just didn’t shoot at magazine length. Hell, I like .260 Rem and ran it for a very, very long time. I especially loved it in my AI rifles. But next barrel will be a 6.5x47 or 6.5 Creedmoor. I’ll likely be getting rid of a bunch of .260 dies and brass though.

Yeah and I don't know why I let myself get sucked into these stupid debates...no restraint sometimes I guess. Always turns into a Jerry Springer show
:)

That makes it fun. See for example the reference to the Dual Focal Plane Steiner. To really start some fun one only has to reference the quality of Steiner glass. Sub-par in many peoples opinion. Then of course there is the "fact" (IMO) that they got it ass backwards. They should have emulated FFP at low powers and SFP at higher powers. That eliminates the need to look around the fence post to see your target at higher powers.

There are plenty of fun and nuanced (and not so nuanced) arguments to be had for those who enjoy argument. I do enjoy it, so do you. That's why we end up rolling around in the mud on these subjects. :)

A big part of the 6.5 Creed. is the timing of it and the PR. If the bullets of today had been around when the 260 came out I think it would've been twisted faster, That and the shooting industry going to "lighter recoil" compact cartridges, the push in PRS shooting and target shooting in general called for a more "modern" 264 cal. The 6.5 Creed just doesn't do anything the 260 won't do.

There were bullets available back then. Terry Cross and Jim Clark used to beat our butts with their .260s and we were all shooting .308s in the early 2000s. It was Remington dropping the ball and not seeing the potential. The 6.5 came out in 2007/2008 and by about 2012 it was being used by a lot of people. The .260 came out in 1997/1998 and never really took off due to Remington. If they did offer a good twist and their long range rifle in it and loaded good precision ammo for it then it might have taken off more. Hornady only offered two loads at first in the Creedmoor for long range. If Remington did that it would have really helped the .260.

Just because you say the Creedmoor won't do anything the .260 won't doesn't make it true. ;) Try loading some 140+ in an AR mag without the bullet pushed deep in the case. Try finding a long range precision rifle in .260. Go look for some .260 long range ammo. As I said ballistically they do the same thing as the bullet doesn't know what cartridge is sending it down range but there are advantages to the Creedmoor to the shooter today.

I appreciate the comments, both pro and con.

That said, I am a bit older (74 next month) and less prone to jump on new bandwagons. My primary foci (double focus) these days are hunting and air rifles. No primers or powder or expensive bullets to deal with in the air rifle, and I can shoot it five days a week at an indoor range 8 minutes from my driveway. The indoor range thing is really killer since the weather channel thinks it is supposed to hit 105-degrees today for the sixth time this month.
Hunting seasons on this continent are in cooler weather, and a hundred primers will last two years. My next trip to RSA, the case will have two rifles; a Borchardt in 6.5x57 Rimmed, and a .500 3" NE double rifle.

Thanks to all,

ISS
