Is 357 maximum as good as I’ve read?

I had a 10 inch 357 Max Contender barrel and sold it because I wanted a 14 inch for higher velocities. Bought this used 14 made by SSK industries and it’s a shooter. Using it this year in Ohio for deer season. Don’t know why previous owner had a brake installed. 357 Max sure doesn’t need a brake and this thing is a pussy cat to shoot. 180 gr XTP at 1885 fps

I killed a 3 1/2 year old buck last week with my 357 max in Ohio.
Mine is a 16 1/2" MGM barrel with a nightforce NX-8 scope and I'm getting 2350 fps with hornady 180 xtps and LiL gun, per Magnito speed.
I use a suppressor and it makes a nice short package that's easy to shoot.
I've knocked bucks off thier feet at 120yds with it, seems to have plenty enough power.
I ordered some Sierra 200gr round nose to try next. So far it's my favorite deer gun.

Resale is no issue for me with the 357 max caliber. Just sold my 16.5” barreled max for $450 to buy a 21” barreled max. I prefer longer barrels. Have killed 2 Ohio whitetail with mine and it anchors them just like a slug gun will with half the recoil. It’s by far my favorite round to shoot and reload for.

Want a near new 10 inch Eacbo custom TC bull contour 357 Max bbl...PM me...bought as gift and designee passed away unespectedly, so... have max rifle, never shot it, kept in plastic with silica, two very minor specs were under fore grip...I was too lazy to remove when servicing every few weeks...oil etc.

Bought the first Super 14 I saw way-y-y back when. At that time the armchair writers that mostly shot with typewriters "poo-pooed" it. However, over the years I piled up a lot of venison from 30 to 145 yards. Never lost an animal. The longest shot(quartering away)was the only one that I recovered a bullet from, lodged under the hide on the off side.

If you do your part, no worries about the cartridge.

Careful with the old Federal silhouette brass though. Some of it was pretty thick and loads could get HOT in a hurry.

BTW- still have two of the barrels, one unfired.

PM me if I can help.

If you're looking at a revolver the 357 Max isn't my choice. In a Contender it's a different ball game as you can seat the bullet out and it's a whole new cartridge. For me it performed as well as my 35 Remington. The 35 Remington can be equated to the 357 Herrett. Plus in the TC Contender you can use pointed bullets as long as you choose wisely.

Agree.
The revolver has wicked top strap cutting.
I have a 16” rifle Contender.
