Interesting 221

I'd shoot the chit out it....it'd make a minty PD exterminator.

I'd even go so far as to re-barrel and restock into BR mode.

I used to have unfired safe queens...no mas.

Now they're just tools meant to be used....if they get scratched or dented...so be it...although I have to admit I'd be particularly careful with this one.

You LUCKY DOG!! :D:D:D Be curious as to how much free bore there is on the chamber.
Short throat makes for long chamber life. (not that the throat on a .221 Fireball will be burnt out THAT fast)
Not a gun freak but, I keep thinking, that's one of the prettiest rigs I've seen in a long time. Lucky you!!:cool:
Guess making maybe 1/2 dozen actions like that wouldn't be profitable for Remington? Not costing anything to dream. :):)

Everything about that little rifle appeals to me on the basis of being just cooler than all get-out. Have never seen an aperture rear sight mounted like that, and the futuristic front sight grabs your attention. Very cool purchase - hope it shoots good for you, but even if it doesn't, it's still a very fine attention-getter!

Interesting! I googled it and didn’t find anything under model 600 XL. Wonder if it’s a new release-can you tell anything by the serial #? If not it may be an experimental version-and very rare. Trigger doesn’t look like either the Walker version or the x-mark either.
That looks like the standard 600 trigger to me
The safety and position of the pull are distinct

I would be building a 30 BLK or 30 br if I had that. I love short actions I have a 6mm br on a 600 it would be a shame to destroy something so unique but that's my nature. I have sold guns so I wouldn't mess with them.
I hope you enjoy it

Both the 300bo and 30br are way too long for the magazine. Internally its just over 1.8". Perfect for fireball type cases. Believe me the temptation is there to order a barrel for it. IF I got down that road itll be a 17 or 20 caliber of some flavor. Or maybe stick with a 221 but have the muzzle end flair so I could thread it for a can

Recently picked up a 221 on gunbroker. The action looked shorter in the picture than an xp-100 or model 7. Its quite a bit shorter. They didnt have a picture with the action open so I wasnt sure if it was a single shot or a repeater. The bolt is the one in front, the other one is an xp-100 for reference. Bolt body is 1" shorter than the xp.

I don't know chit (new word that I saw here) except capable machinists doing government projects on the job. This thing has bothered me since the initial post. I did some research and of course the XP has Mike Walkers finger prints all over it. The Internet says the XP came from the 40X which was built in the custom shop. Probably easier for GPs to be made there and slide under the wire. Johnny Cash build, I got it one piece at a time in my big lunch kit. The bolt diameter looks to be the same as a rimfire 40X. Does anyone know what that is? Shortening a center fire bolt could be done at home but super easy on the Job at Remington, The stock? The only laminated stocks that the laminated were that wide were on 6.5 and 350 Magnums that I can remember. I stumbled on a website about Dallas of all things, and they had a diagram of Dealey Square, two cases were found both 222 not 221 and they were on opposite ends of the wall. that could be anything. Maybe the press in the briefcase could have been there because 221 ammo may not have been readily available and probably wasn't plus someone buying a lot to practice with would have drawn attention. I have always contended that being shot in the back of the head would not make the head pitch back. Is that serial number actually on file at Remington. This rifle is beyond interesting. Where ever it came from it is part of someone's history.

Another thought. The first thing that Remington tried was a 222 and dropped that idea because of too much muzzle blast So, they didn't lengthen the action when they went to longer cartridges. Did they play with the idea of a rimfire target pistol?

Hahaha..what a little pork chop..that thing is cool!.
Nice score.
I remember the days i was always floating the internet for cool guns..brother ive owned some cool guns in my time so far. It has been an absolute privilege to shoot them, enjoy them , and then sell them, so some one else can enjoy
We cant take-m with us..but im bringing my S&W 617 just in case..they can have it when they take it from my cold dead hands hahaha..its my favorite hand gun of all time so far..kind of lame but it is what it is.
Its such a fun week when a new gun comes home.
You can sit all alone like some freak, and play with it. and its completely socially acceptable..
Hahaha
Thats a uniquely cool rifle i think you got a keeper..
Oh every once in a long long while you find a gun..you will never sell..EVER!..

I have a friend, best gunsmith I have ever known. We shot Schuetzen rifles together at the Coors Matches about 40+ years ago for probably 15 years. He wanted to get his wife to shoot, but she wanted a "different, pretty rifle". One summer we are at Coors Championships and she comes back to the table and tells Steve, "I've found it...". We go look, and this shooter out of Texas had a (IIRC) Wesson LR rifle rebarreled and restocked. Nobody had made one in over a hundred years. Steve asked me to find a set of blueprints when we got back. I go to the US Logo&Trademarks Office and download a set. I send them to him, and six months later he sends me pictures of his & hers. Hers scaled down to about 3/4 scale in 32 Miller Short.

He also wanted a 6PPC for BR. He likes a challenge. One summer we drove over and he was showing his 6PPC. He had taken an FN military action, once an 8x57 and cut the action at a 30-degree angle, and cut it again an inch back and tig'ed it back together. He then took the bolt, shortened it an inch, welded up the face of the bolt and recut it to PPC head size. Made a bottom plate single shot adaptor contoured it to suit, and tig'ed it in place. Bought an LV Hart barrel and made a stock from a blank to fit. That kind of gunsmith who makes actions.

No. All those wild, wonderful times, I never thought they would end.

It's similar to my spine issues. I fell February 1st of 2022. The VA kept saying it was just a "Severe Muscle Tear", and that it would heal. It took them 16 months to do an MRI and figure out it was a Compression Fracture.

Oh Baaaaby!...BOING!...hahaha
absolutely beautiful rifle and cartridge combination back when Remington was special.
Thats a keeper. Ide have to agree kind of a unicorn ive never seen one now that i have im even more mad at Remington hahaha
