Interapid

Hello.

Because english isn my mother tongue, I am having a hard time to choose the right interapid indicator for barrel work.

http://www.longislandindicator.com/p23.html#ExtraLongPoint

What of these is best for dialing a barrel?

The 312B-15X who is horizontal

Or this

312B-15VX who is vertical

Both of these have a 5,5" contact point. Or the one with 2,75" contact point is enough?

Actually I use range rods, with goods results, but the interapid seems a better choice

Could someone help, as this is a expensive item to bring to my country?

Thanks

When you prebore and indicate with range rods, two points are estabelished straight with another. One, next to cat head, where the neck will be located. Another some distance ahead, maybe 1 to 2 inches. The end of chamber will be straight with these two point too. When using the interapid, what points are dialed straight? The chamber end(web area) and the throat? I must Forget the portion ahead of the throat?

If someone is willing help me to understand this process, I will be glad..

Excuse language errors....:(

Thanks

You probably don't want to pick the web and throat so your next two choices would be the throat and a point ahead of the throat or the throat and the muzzle. Much has been written, discussed and argued over with the latter two methods which is why there are likely no replies to your question. A bit of a search on your part should bring up plenty of opinions on the matter.

There is a DVD by Gordy Gritters that show's his way of setting up a barrel. I use his method and it works for me. I pre-bore the chamber undersize and then use the reamer. I indicate off of the groves, some indicate off the lands. I like to get the bore as straight as I can for 2-3" ahead of the chamber, less than .001" most end up about .0003" ahead of the chamber. I have been using Interapid indicators for over 40 yrs, they are good. I use a mituoyo indicator to indicate the chamber, throat, bore. It is a # 513-512. It has a .375 round body and has a 1.375" long point. My indicator has .0005" mark or gaduations that are spaced so you can see .0002 with ease. I can reach in the barrel for 2.624" if the chamber is larger than .375 in the body. I hope this gives you some info. My Interapid indicators are the horizontal 312B-1 with a short tip (.600" ).
