Input on Actions

If the only purpose is a heavy barrel hunting rifle, why would you not want a repeater?
Not many here that shoots sage rats use a repeater. Everyone that I'm aware of either has a single shot bolt gun, or a repeater with a single shot follower installed.

The shooting can get frisky in a hot rat patch, shoot, leave the bolt open to allow air to circulate and cool the barrel, glass for the next target, when target is acquired, close the bolt on a loaded round and repeat. Brass never touches the ground....shoot, extract into your hand, brass goes back in the box, loaded round goes into the loading tray ready for the next shot.

That's not saying a repeater wouldn't work, it's just that very few (none) veteran shooters I know use one. No need really.

Bolt open, barrel cooling, loaded round ready for the next target to appear:

I prefer loading one at a time. To me it much simpler, less disturbance on the round, better way to keep heat down between strings. I have never shot a left port setup, but it makes sense when shooting off a bench in a rat patch.
^^Yes^^… I shoot Bench Rest and am a reloader, so I prefer single shot, Right Bolt, Left Port, Right Eject. Want the cases going out the right side, captured on the bench. Load from the Left, of course.

Rick, if you want it to be an ejector, I'd sure recommend a right eject. One thing to consider about a left port is that the left side of you face will be exposed to the port. Also, with a left port, rt eject you can sometimes get a 'toss through' if the rt ejection port is big enough.

The type of ejector is also important. A 700 style can be tuned to roll the cases out the side. Some others depend on the speed of the bolt manipulation.

Owning and having shot both styles for quite a few years now, my suggestion would be a right bolt/right port with a 700 style ejector. They are every bit as fast when you need it. For easy feeding, the coned bolt option is a must.

Lots of actions available in this config with a Rem foot print, too. I love my Kelbly Atlas single shot with the coned bolt. You can also get the 'Panda' spacer fron Kelbly's so you can use barrels done to the common 1.115" 'Panda' head space. Super interchangability and no need to send your action to have a barrel fitted. :) The Rem footprint openes up a ton of stock options, too. It's at the top of your price point but worth it. They can do them with a standard finish rather than nitrided if you like a little bling.

For what it's worth.... -Al

So Al, are you saying that you wouldn't recommend a left port at all? Just want to be sure I read that right.
I understand not liking the opening pointed at your face, but is there something else? And how could that be run near as fast as a RBLP?
Just curious as to your thoughts.

I wouldn't go so far as to say I don't recommend them. Heck, I have and shoot several. Even w/o an ejector, a RT/RT with a coned bolt can be run pretty fast if you've got a decent size loading port.

Just some things to consider... -Al

My LR Rockchuck rifle are single shot RBLPLE. Right hand opens/closes the bolt, left hand catches the empty, sits it in the ammo box, and then reloads. I take three rifles, and switch off about every ten rounds.
