Info On 6MM ARC

My granddaughter has caught the shooting bug, so now I need to build some guns! First I need to put together a Tactical Rifle for CMP rules, which can be about any caliber, so what are everyone's suggestions? I want some type of 6MM, and I hear good things about the 6MM ARC. I'll probably go with that unless someone convinces me otherwise!

Thanks!

Steve

I bought one for my granddaughter recently for next years deer hunting. She has nerve issues and is sensitive to blast and loud noise pulses.
I've been working up loads for it using 85 Sierras and 85 Noslers. I'm working with 8208 right now and both are half inch or a little bit more.
This is in a Ruger Gen 2 with 22 inch barrel.
It will eventually get a can.

'What distances will she be competing at, and what bullet weight are you considering?

I agree with Ledd Slinger's post.

Alpha has VERY good brass for it if you reload. Peterson is also darned good too. JME. WD

I just had a rifle built for a local match. Any cartridge but it must be an AR, either 10 or 15. The distance is 300 yards.

I went with 6 ARC. It seems to be the optimum choice for an AR15. Lots of good 6mm bullets. Excellent quality cases available. Largest case volume that can be safely fit in an AR15 platform that does not break bolts. Off the shelf bolt (Grendel Type II). Off the shelf mags that just plain work.

Thanks for all the good advice, guys! I've decided to go with the ARC! It will be up to 600 yards, and I'll use Berger 105 Hybrids and some flavor of Vihtavuori. Any advice on which powder, etc.?

I have had the most success with N140. I tried Reloder 16 but my measured velocities were 200 fps slower than predicted by Gordon's Reloading Tool. I tried Varget but saw pressure signs before I worked up to max pressure according to GRT.

What I've gathered is that the bolt needs to be a later "enhanced" version; have any recommendations? Now I need to find a reamer to borrow or rent. One barrel is probably all I'll need to do.

How much experience does your granddaughter have shooting mid-range prone?

I really like the 6ARC, and think your heading in the right direction for sure!

However, when working with newer shooters out to 600 yards I have good success with .223 Wylde chambered AR’s. For me, cost is a factor. I recommend building her a quality gun with built with good parts, but start out with a .223 wylde barrel (from someone like White Oak, Proof Research, CLE, Criterion, Green Mountain etc).

Ammo cost will be much cheaper as the learning curve is climbing….and she will wear it out. After that, I’d swap the barrel out for a 22” 6mm ARC (and change the Bolt).

By the time you get her o the 6 ARC, She will be very used to the gun, learned a lot about wind calling and you’ll have a few extra bucks in your pocket.

I have been working with quite a few newer shooters, I start them on AAC 75 grain ammo (.50/round from PSA on sale). When they get to the point that they are calling the fliers, they are ready for

Good Luck and See ya at the Range!
