Indexing a rifle barrel...

Aww shucks, I've only been machining since '74. Mostly in job shop settings but a few years in a bearing plant with several years in a plant where we made control valves for the Navys' nuculear power plants. What did you do,,, work in the same shop doing everything the same ol' way for all those years? In the past 10-15 years, since you've been retired , tooling has made some of the greatest advances I've seen in my working life. And I've had my hands on it, working with some of that "new" technology. While you're sitting around tapping on those computer keys all day, as your posts show, I'm still makin'chips and getting dirt under my finger nails taking advantage of that new tooling technology and being exposed to more, all the time. Drilling has changed, turning has changed, you're behind the curve. That hone, no matter what you think, is not going to "straighten out the hole" in the manner you are proposing. It all starts with the initial drilled hole and the quality of the material being drilled. Both of those (tooling and material, as long as it's the premium stuff, like rifle barrels are made of) have made tremendous advances in the past 10yrs (since you've been retired).
Well it nice for you to tell what I did in life and you don't even know me.
Thanks Larry

No use in talking in facts around here are they. Below has to do with the OP's question in an email that I just received from Gene Beggs.

Hi Butch

Yes, I found a way to index barrels using a diffrentially threaded bushing between the receiver and tenon threads. It worked perfectly and was invisible in place. The only drawback was that the tenon diameter had to be reduced to accommodate the bushing. I always knew it was safe but the rifle would not shoot the loads I used before without the cases tightening up.

It was an interesting project but I decided it was not worth the extra effort and you sure would not want to place that system in the hands of an amateur who wouldn't leave it alone. I finally decided it was best to simply locate the natural droop of the barrel to the six o'clock position and let it go at that.

Gene

One thing that Gene may not have mentioned to you, but did in his earlier writing on his indexing system, is that the pressure issue came up with the PPC but, if memory serves, not with smaller diameter cases like the .222. Given that the accuracy potential is there for that case category, especially when wind is not a factor (because testing was done in his tunnel) I think that one can take his recommendations quite seriously. The originality of his thought, in coming up with a way to test the effect of clocking without having to redo the barrel for each orientation should not be underestimated. IMO it is a brilliant solution.

I thought it was interesting to see that he preferred the 6 o'clock position. He must be wrong because he is not on the internet.

Glad I just now found that out. Getting ready to chamber a 6 x 47L and was going to index the barrel point up...the exact opposite of a droop, and would have been 180 degrees out of phase. Whew, that was a close one! !

I time my long range guns up . But that is me. Reason we shoot with the barrel in the sun . Along with the thought of heat rising . I know as metals stretch . I feel with both the barrel will go down. Larry

If heat rises won't it raise your barrel? I guess the heat makes it heavier and it drops?
I know certain things rise when it gets hot and drops when it cools off!

You got it that why I index up . As barrel heats you pressure goes up and the gun higher and the barrel should go down from the heat.

Say What ? ? ?
If you go back and read . I said I time my barrel because of heat . The top of the barrel is always the hottest . From the sun and the heat from shooting the hotter metal gets the more it expands . With a barrel timed up it should aim lower with heat .
But at the same time the barrel normally shoots faster. So the bullet should shoot higher. My feeling it is a good trade off at long range. Right or wrong I do it my way.

This is a fun thread that brings out a bunch of opinions. I like the ones that do it this way, whatever it is, and ain't gonna change!
Tom, Midland Odessa is a terribly hot area and desolate. I think it is cooler underground and with fans to move the spent gases and smoke may keep it cool. The front part od his tunnel is an office reloading area and has AC.
When you get down to it you will find very few that orient their barrels in a certain direction as they don't use the "Gordy" method.

Yes, but don't forget Larry is in Florida where it gets really hot. Not like in Texas where it just gets warm.
