Barrel Indexing and Barrel Nut

I never said anything about rings but I know you understand . Hell to be old . Larry
A drilled hole with a gun drill is what it is bore reamer is not going to straight the drilled hole it is only going too put it in size so you can rifle a button rifling process will not straighten a hole either if you straighten a button rifle barrel before stress relieve or after stress relieve the existing hole go back to where it was when you straightened it.

There are respected benchrest quality gunsmiths that indicate both ends of a barrel, when chambering through the headstock, and there are others, equally respected, who indicate at the chamber end only. Barrels chambered using both methods have done well in competition.

Years back the chambered by hand and they shot . Many of winning guns have been chamber off the tail stock or a steady rest.

Well nobody can give me average time on this four jaw fitting gun barrels I guess I am doing it wrong if I start early in the morning I can fit at least 4 sometimes 5 barrels a day if I don't run in to any trouble.

Ya', OK,,,, but there some who can only do one! Some will have the barrel dialed-in in 10 minutes, some will need an hour. Some use a flush system and can run higher RPM without doing damage to the tool, some will peck away at it .050" at a peck. So, OK where's the "average". There are probably about as many ways that take varying amounts of time as there are people doing it. You've got some who've made their living machining for 20-40yrs., and guys who've never been around machine tools. Some are hobbiests some are professionals . Suppose there's a difference in how long it takes one or the other to set-up and chamber a barrel? Your probably not doing it wrong , you're just trying to be a smart a$$.

"It would depend on machines . 1/2 to a hour each end plus cutting. Larry"

Here's a guy who states that being within .0002" is acceptable and yet spends 1/2 to an hour on each end, plus cutting. He must keep removing and replacing those range rods. Go figure.
