IMR-4227, H414 uses?

Bill Jourdan found H414 accurate in 250 Ackley Improved with bullets ranging from 75 to 120 grains, but he did note "Watch powder lot". It should therefore be ok in 25 CM and probably the 6 and 6.5 CMs as well. If you look in Hodgdon's data, all H414 and 760 data are identical, or used to be.

H414, Winchester 760 and Accurate 2700... all the same powder, but switching from one to the other would require the same care as when changing lot numbers within the same powder.
I asked western several years ago if 2700 was the same as h414 and was told no. H414 was dropped by hodgdon but w760 is still with us. Good in a number of rounds

Just going by an in-depth article published in Handloader Magazine on Accurate powders several years ago. Timing was good, since I had acquired several 8-pound jugs of 2700 and listings were pretty scant at the time. Since that time I have used 2700 in many cartridges where H414 and 760 were listed, but no 2700. Simply following good loading practices - start low, work up - gave me good results with no problems.
Most loading manuals show data for all three either identical or with statistical difference margins one would see from testing on different days, humidity levels, brass, primer, powder lots or etc. Hodgdon now owns Accurate and listings with the three powders are quite close...even identical in many cases. The main difference in their chart is that often the listings for 2700 use different bullets, brass and primers but with near identical results to 760 and H414. I'm guessing that this is due to Hodgdon mostly adopting Western's existing loading charts.
I use 2700 in .17 Remington (25-grain where charge listings are identical with all three powders, though components vary) and .243 as well as selected loads in .280 and .30-06. For fun, look up .243 or .30-06 with the powders in question on Hodgdon's Data Center and notice how close all three powders are, but how much change there is with different bullets even in the same weight and sometimes manufacturer group.

Hi all,

I recently happened into a bunch of powder and in it were a few things that I haven’t tried before. Of those I’m looking to start with IMR-4227 and H414.

Does anyone have a favorite use for either of those? Not so much looking for data(unless you have something you want to share), more looking for a direction. I have a number of manuals that I’m going to dig through to find and/or cross check with for my actual loads. Just kinda looking for a place to start.

Basically I want to try it in stuff that’s likely to work well and not burn expensive and hard to get primers on stuff that won’t work well. I load for a bunch of different calibers, so even if I don’t have whatever you might suggest, I probably have something close that would be worth trying.

So if you have a favorite caliber or even a particular bullet you like with those powders, I’d love to hear about it!

Thanks in advance!
I use IMR-4227 in a .38-55 single shot Winchester 1885 Hi-Wall

I have searched high and low for H-414. Of course, now that it has been discontinued I have a 243 AI in the works! Well, at least I finally found some WIN 760.
