IMR-4227, H414 uses?

Hi all,

I recently happened into a bunch of powder and in it were a few things that I haven’t tried before. Of those I’m looking to start with IMR-4227 and H414.

Does anyone have a favorite use for either of those? Not so much looking for data(unless you have something you want to share), more looking for a direction. I have a number of manuals that I’m going to dig through to find and/or cross check with for my actual loads. Just kinda looking for a place to start.

Basically I want to try it in stuff that’s likely to work well and not burn expensive and hard to get primers on stuff that won’t work well. I load for a bunch of different calibers, so even if I don’t have whatever you might suggest, I probably have something close that would be worth trying.

So if you have a favorite caliber or even a particular bullet you like with those powders, I’d love to hear about it!

Thanks in advance!

If I remember correctly h414 is close or identical to w760. 270w is one application, 22-250. Should be kind of close to 4350 burn speed. If you are thinking of a cartridge, try nosler load data, they seem to use it a fair amount

H414, Winchester 760 and Accurate 2700... all the same powder, but switching from one to the other would require the same care as when changing lot numbers within the same powder.

H414 (discontinued) same as W760 as stated above. Meters very well in progressive press for 243 Winchester and 70 grain Nosler BT varmint bullets. Mid 90% fill in case and mid 3000fps. Nosler manual has good load data as well as Hodgdon reloading site.

H414 -Also useful for the 303 British and similar - Krag? Great for the 30-06 and most cartridges that use H4350 burn rate powders.

Didn't do much testing but had some starting luck with H414 in the 22/250 with 50-55g varmint bullets. I didn't pursue this since the powder has been discontinued, and going to trade the H414 with a buddy who uses it in his deer rifle loads.

I have been playing around with IMR 4227 in my 30BR. 31.3 grains gives the same velocity as 35.3 grns of 4198 With my 112 grn bullet.

So far, It doesn’t shoot quite as good as my 4198 load, but it is close.

I use H414 in 250 Savage with 115-120gr bullets.
Also 7mm-08AI with 120-140gr bullets.
257 Roberts with 75gr bullets.
