I'm not your borescope

The layouts of some stores almost prohibit this though, rows and rows of guns, and everyone needs to aim out the front window. Having all firearms in cases or behind counters is sometimes not doable.
In our particular case we were 4000 ft.² and inside a brick building with zero windows but I do understand what you are saying. But I don’t think there’s any excuse no matter what the layout for gun safety not being first priority, anything else is just being lazy. It’s a store culture issue and it starts at the top and if the store owner or store management isn’t practicing good and safe gun handling and enforcing it with their customers then you can’t expect it to ever get better on its own. Those are the stores that I avoid at all cost because you can tell the minute you walk in the door where their priorities are.

Yeah. I have the bolt out. I was there first. I am at window to catch some light. Super Delta Force Ninja walks in front of me and weapon. Blah Blah Blah. Don't trip on the way out . . . ..

I worked in a gun store for nearly ten years.

Guns being pointed at people is a completely unavoidable problem. It’s a crappy problem, but unless it boils down to one person at a time handling a gun in the store, which would suck for business and shopping, it’s a problem that hopefully an employee addresses when they can or as a customer you police it on your own.

Picking a rifle off the rack, holding it horizontally at face level to read the markings, and flipping it back and forth to look at both sides, is completely avoidable.

His store clerk buddy stood by and said nothing. Completely avoidable.

I admit I have momentarily muzzle swiped people by accident at times when handling a firearm. But in a gun store it’s easy enough to keep the muzzle pointed up long enough to open and verify an empty chamber.

If the guns are accessible on the rack to people who wish to view them, they get pointed in all directions.

Then obviously the clerk didn’t police it, nor did anyone else......so it’s not completely avoidable.

During my years working in a gun store I came across quite a few idiots but the people who were actually more comical to deal with were the older guys that believed they were the safest gun handlers out there. More often than not this particular type of person wasn’t very safe when it came to handling firearms, semi auto pistols in particular.

The store I worked in had locked handgun cases, like most do. However myself and the customer would stand together at the case when they chose to view a gun, rather than me be behind the counter.

After working in the business for some time I realized how dumb or unpredictable people can be while looking at guns, so I developed a fairly specific way I handed semi-auto pistols to people.

I would take the gun out of the locked case, lock the case while holding the gun in my hand. I would then clear the gun so the customer could clearly see it was empty. I would then close the slide and insert the empty magazine back into the gun and proceed to hand the gun, grip first to the customer, in such a way the muzzle was not pointing at myself.

I had a couple of these “safety expert” type of guys tell me how wrong this was to do. How I should hand a gun to them open and magazine free....dah dah dah.

Why would I do this?

My safety. Any jackass can come into a store with a loaded glock magazine and ask to see a gun, load said magazine in the gun and proceed to shoot people. My theory with handing them the gun closed and with an empty mag in the gun would give me at least some time anyway to try and stop some crazy from doing this.

The “experts” never thought this way.

I’m not advocating people can walk in a gun store and wave guns around, but what I’m getting at is when you have guns accessible to the general shopping public you’re going to have problems with muzzles being pointed in directions they ought not be pointed.

So when I'm shopping next to you, I shouldn't be looking down the barrel of that rifle you just picked up on the used gun rack.

Understood. I had a hard time looking thru a demo scope in a store on just a stock, w action, no trigger, no bottom metal, no bbl.
Just should not be pointing a weapon anywhere near a person. Should be an alarm going off - not safe.

I only go in the mornings during the week. Not many people local to me see shooting equip. like we use so I spend more time than I like playing " Show & Tell". Mandatory safety training ends up being more like having to check the " I Agree" box online if there isn't a R.O. there to keep the kids in line......But I do think the safety training is a good idea.....If you have them check the " I Agree" box when the training is complete it is easier to give them the boot.
when we first started teaching out 2nd daughter to shoot (at 8 years old of course) we would take her on the weekend so she didnt miss school. 3 times in a row( on the weekend) there was a live weapon pointed down the line. now I keep her out of school on weekdays to shoot, never again on weekends:rolleyes:

I spend alot of time at a gun range , even work there from time to time and you are correct..... The range I am at is only open two days and in those two days only 8-10hours combined.... But in those few hours is when the roofs get holes in them and most (99%) I would say the damage is done , some by accident and some on purpose.... I don't even go those two days anymore unless I am working there... I have seen some crazy things during that time... It's funny how during the time it's members only we have zero problems... I wish they would not even have public days and make it members only... Honestly if you can't afford $200 a year you probably shouldn't be shooting....
