If I was just looking to go BIG and shoot 1000-1800yrds I would go with the AI .338 Lapua Magnum. I like my 300RUM but they both have some real recoil.
If you looking for something in the 500-1000yrds I would definitely look at a Custom built 6.5-284win shooting a 140gr bullet

I want to shoot tactical and bench out of one gun.
To answer your question as to why? I'm a total rookie learning this long reach out and touch something shooting, and though my wife has never complained I've always heard bigger is better.
As for the 6.5x284, I've heard it's a great round with a short barrel life. I'd want something that would get into the 2000 rounds range.
I'm open for an education though!

Even with the 6mm AI, 6.5x47 Lapua ect... you're still not going to get 2000 rounds

why go big? Cost of reloading components, shorter barrel life, etc. It just costs more to shoot, and beats you up to do it.
You stated total rookie, put togather something like a 260 rem, good barrel life and won't break the bank or beat you up. If you want more power look into a 7 mm WSM or 7mm Rem Mag.
Bigger isn't better in some cases. Managing recoil is important. Reading wind and weather conditions and knowing how to compensate is more important, and that takes trigger time.

As a varmint shooter I know Doping the Wind is the most important thing to getting hits.
As a Rookie I'm looking for advise from guys that shoot 1000 yards, and I'm getting some great info here and on the PM's I receive.

If you want the best of both worlds, tact & BR, I can't say much for Tact. but for 600/1000 BR the 300wsm or 300win w/210's is tough to beat,plus,I would guess you could maybe load 168-175-180 for tactical and the recoil would be managable with lighter bullets.

Seeing the rest of your requirements, I'll agree 100% with Matt below...300 WSM or Win. Period.
Magfeeder for Tact. app....precision capability and bore life for 2K competetive rounds.
Also, no brass forming.
338 anything is overkill for only 1000yds.

I would try a 260 or a 6.5x55. Both are very accurate moderate recoil and both will shoot to 1000yds.
Both of these are excellent tactical rounds and both are accurate to 1000yds. If your primary reason for shooting is 1000yr BR then go with a 7MMWSM or 300WSM. Another nice round would be a .284 shooting a 168 7mm bullet. The 6.5s and the .284 shooting the 168s will get you to 2000rds if you don't abuse the gun.

Take a 190grs SMK at about 3000fps you´ll have a good balance between ballistics and recoil, depending on rifles weight)and if used right you´ll still have good accuracy when you´ve bought your third 6,5x284...
I´m using a .30"-.338Lapua and get 1/2" groups at 100Meters from a Shilen SM after 2600 rounds done....

I still haven't made up my mind but I do see the logic of getting away from a 338.
I'm starting to lean towards a 300 Win Mag simply because I have one already as my open country deer and elk gun, I won't have to buy multiple reloading equipment, and I can handle the recoil even without a brake.

Hornady has a 208 gr A-Max bullet, advertised BC of .648 I haven't tried any yet but am going to get a couple hundred next time I order from Midway. Had good luck with the 178 A-Max so far in a .308 and I bet the 208's will work great in my 30-06. Keep it in mind for your project.

300 WSM with 1-11 twist.
couple reasons.
1. Barrel life, for some reason the WSMs are getting 2000-3000 rounds and still competitive. My first barrel had over 2300 in it and placing at the Nationals and Danny Brooks has a WSM with over 3000 rds that will kick butt. No one is getting over 1200-1400 max in 300 Win Mag.
2. BR NF with MP8 reticle, 20 MOA base, 210 bergers and you can reach 1650 yards I know and shoot 18" for five shots.
Now, I will also say that a good 6.5x55 AI with RWS brass will go a long, long time and is extremely competitive.
