Going Really big in the 30 cal.

Dragman, I've been on another forum for quite sometime now. There is a guy by the name of Kirby Allen that has made his own line called the Allen Magnum. Here's his website and info on all of his calibers.

Would be worth a look if you want to go big and fast.

Wow! Thanks for the link you provided! This Allen guy has got everybody trumped as far as down right wicked velocity.

Have looked at the Allen site. The 300 Allen Express is an improved Lapua case. He doesn't state the increased powder capacity but if it is 10% it would improve velocity approximately 2.5% over the standard 30 Lapua. Top loads in a 30-378 are about 3000fps with the 220 gr bullet, 28" barrel.
I don't think he can achieve the 3200-3250 he posts with the 240 gr and 30" barrel. He is using extremely high pressures or a longer barrel.
He has a series, Allen Magnum, based on the.408 Chey Tech, but I don't see a .308 in that. You could definately drive the 240 gr higher with that case but it would toast the barrel in a hurry.
I would like to see an independent lab test his loads, starting with a 65000psi max, then varying case capacity and barrel length until bore capacity was reached for the .308. 240 gr bullet.
I suspect this type experiment has been done at Aberdeen Proving Ground with other bullet weights and powders. Also, Roy Weatherby used to do some of this.
Mr. Allen is operating with the same physics and mechanical principals that are well known. There are advances in propellants but I doubt the ones he is using will push a 240gr .308 at 3200-3250fps from a 30" barrel in a Lapus case with safe pressures, even on the high side of 65,000psi.
Let him show us the data on pressure, velocity, barrel length. Until then, call me skeptical.

Dragman, why stop at a 30 cal? Sounds like you need a McMillan Tac 50. I shot one a couple of weeks ago and this thing needs to have it's legs streched. 850 yards does not do this animal justice. All kidding aside I've owned 3 .300 RUM's. 1 was throated for the .240 SMK, 1 was a Sendaro that Col. Billy Steven's put a brake on for me, and the last 1 I still have and hunt. It is a factory noodle barrel 26" Remington that Billy put a brake on it also, it's bedded. At 200 yards 1/2" 5 shot groups with 180 Nosler BT, at 1000 yards I rung an 8" gong everytime I squeezed the trigger, 7 or 8 times in a row. I have a .300 Lapua with a 34" barrel that makes these .300 RUM's of mine take a backseat. Haven't shot it in a while, may have to get rid of it, it's collecting dust. If your looking to keep a little coin in your pocket the .300 RUM would do that if you use Remington brass, it may limit you a little, but you'll never know till you try.

That would be great for reloaders but the RUM is a direct competitor to their successful .338 Lapua. Lapua brass is superb and I would use it in everythig if it were available. I would like to see a head to head comparison between .338 Lapua, .338 edge, .338RUM, .338-378. Same pressure limit and barrel length, any powders. You could even use the same barrel by progressively rechambering it. You could do the same for the .308 calibers based on these cases.
Results would be enlightening. Wouldn't be that expensive for one of the big companies to do. The downside is that the truth may hurt sales for some and variety and controversy is a hugh driver of sales.
Just one man's opinion.

IM me when you do , I may be interested .

How much work do I need to do to a savage magnum bolt face to make it work for the 300RUM??? does anyone sell them pre-made? I have standard and magnum bolt faces, but I would like to buy one already done for the 300 RUM before I buy the barrel.

Savage sells rifles in 300 RUM , just order the separate pieces that you need and change them out .

Get the factory part # for the RUM bolt head and see if Brownels has them , they carry the regular magnums , and they're only about $25 IIRC.

I may be wrong I'm not close to my info right now but I believe the rum's use a standard magnum bolt face right??? If my memory serves me correctly the case is a rebated rim design so remington could chamber it with a std mag bolt. This is why a lot of soources don't recommend the rum's for dangerous game because of possible extraction issues with the rebated rim which I personally have never heard of any extraction problems. Hope my memory isn't way off base here.

Yeah moparman , you're right on about the rims ( I cant remember why I thought the RUM was bigger )

I've got these cartridges in front of me , and my trusty Mitutoyo verniers say :

300 Win Mag + 300 H&H mag are both .527-.528

300 RUM is just a skosh bigger at .530 . . . . . so a regular mag head would probably work just ducky .

As a reference , the 338 Lapua Mag measures .585-.586

( And Mopars rule BTW 8) )

dragman, If you have a magnum bolthead, change it out. You should also go over to the Savage Shooters site. Any question about doing things such as this and anything imagineable to a Savage can be found there. What action are you wanting to do this to? Do you have a barrel? Also I do not believe Savage chambers .300 RUM's anymore.

I have magnum bolt heads so thats great that they work. I would be using one of my target actions for the build if/when I would do it. and no I don't have a barrel yet.

The 338 Lapau case is a very tough case. It is thicker then almost every case and allows heavy loads. My 338 Lapau Imp. shoots the 300 Sierra at 3100 and no pressure at all. Matt

Dragman, you need to call and talk with Kirby himself and talk to him about the Allen Magnums. He has tested and built these rifles for several years. One thing I have learned about Kirby is that he won't post what he can't achieve safely and reliably. Other people on long range hunting site that use his rifles can testify to quality of workmanship and back Kirby's claims in speed and accuracy.

In the 338 Lapau Imp. I was using us869 and i can put in more then i can burn when it really gets cold out. It has a 36" Krieger 10 twist. It is strictly a long range hunting gun. When i chronographed it was actually 3137 over a 35 Ohler. This year i switched to 300 Bergers with H 1000 and ran them 2910 but the clicks don't work out unless i put in 3000 and raise the B.C. a little bit. They are almost as flat as the Sierras. Matt
