If you had a 8 ounces to spare in 10.5 class

would you add weight to reach the limit? Presently, the rifle's mass (ready to shoot) is perfectly balanced around the bore axis. The center of gravity of the rifle is 2.8 inches ahead of the receiver.
Where and how would you add weight to improve the rifle for LV 100/200 BR?

Queen,
Thats the rub, I'd like it to shoot better than it does now. I'm used to shooting 13.5 lb rifles and with a 10 pounder it feels like I could use the extra 8 oz. to some advantage. I realize that it might be a personal thing but with some people using weights in the butt, muzzle weights, etc. it seems like there might be a theory or two out there about adding weight.

Just to add that it is a 222Rem and I want to shoot free recoil. My question is really about what to do with the weight margin in case it may represent an opportunity for improvement using that technique.

what a pikel ....we all struggle with the LV/SP wt guns vs. the LV....that is why lots of folks shoot only the 10.5....once you get used to it you stik with it......add a 20 moa wedge (usually 5-6 oz) or a recoil pad....or better yet get a new bbl 7 oz heavier....you can always use a new bbl....but I dont think the 8oz will make much dif....Roger

Roger,
Whats a pikel?
I can identify with those who would stick with 10.5 once they get the hang of it! It would be interesting if equipment lists included the actual rifle weight in both classes. But for the time being, I would like to try shooting both HV and LV rifles

Mike,
Yes some testing of those options are definitely planned in April when the range opens again.

Toz,
If you was being pikeled you'd know! Soaked in vinegar and pepper corns. It'll pucker your thing! Matter of fact it'll pucker all your things.
Shoot it as is

John

Ha, now I get it ..

below the weight limit you is in a pikel, above the weight limit you is in a pickle :)

Makes me awful curious though about just how light some of those winning LV pikels are.

Heavy short range BR rifles are generally considered to be a little more accurate than an LV not because it is instrinsically more accure but rather because a HV rides the bags better and handles more firmly due to it's weight. I think you're giving up a half pound which could make the rifle handle better.

Take off the scope you now have on it, and add a March Scope, if the additional weight doesn't push you over the limit.

Toz,

the reason I said not to change it, is that I once added weight to my 1k yd LG rig just to get a little closer to the LG limit (17lb). I added weight to the butt (12oz's if I remember correctly), because the gun is extremely front-heavy (29" barrel). By adding that weight, accuracy deteriorated significantly... about half a minute.

I'm not suggesting you would get the same result, just adding in my explanation as to why I suggested not to change anything if it was shooting well.

If it's not shooting as well as you expect it should, like you mentioned above, then adding weight might be a good way to squeeze a little more accuracy out of it (among many other things). You might need to play with the location of the added weight to see if adding more to the front or back makes a difference.

Have fun! It can be a vicious circle!

to the OP (tozman)....you are rite ...most equipment lists dont tell it alllll.....but at an event most of the time we shoot the SP then LV then HV....by the time you get your under 10.5 rig shootin "just rite" you dont wana lay it down and pik up a 13.5lb burzer (sorta like a Curiser) and start all over....and if you got a "hot" bbl on your lil gun you shoot it till it droops down from the heat..ahhahahha...Roger
PS,,us poor folks cant afford to have a seperate HV...just lotsa bbls for ole'Betsy......you can hang a heavy bbl on for HV and not worry if it only weighs 12 +/- lbs.....the thing you gota worry about is whether to hold to the right or to the left!!!!.....and get that idea of keepin wt around the axis of the bbl...!!??....in this day and age the stocks are lighter than evr and scopes are heavier than evr...wht does that do for wt distribution.....have you evr thought about moment of inertia or moment of upset....look at what the stock car experts do with the oil tank (5 gal of oil) on short track vs. super speedway.....and OBTW scores are better than ever too.....shootin matches are not won or lost by a sandbag or a few oz. of gun wt....shoot that ole duce and hav fun, dont let the keyboard shooters tell you that you gota change evry thang.....

Doc and others,

You are right that a real LV gun or barrel would be the ultimate solution however that option is a little farther down the road. Your comments do inspire me to add weight to the barrel as that would be where a true LV gun would have more weight than mine.

A heavier scope would make it top heavy. I'm trying to keep the center of gravity on the bore axis where it is now. There may be a possibility for adding weight under the butt plate which might allow me to offset a heavier scope.
Will make some calculations.

Roger,
Are you sayin that you swap barrels for the HV class or shoot the 10.5 gun as is in the heavier class?

Not at all. There were plenty of Light Varmint class 6PPCs shot at the NBRSA Nationals this year sporting a March scope and they weren't top heavy. Billy Stevens built my 6PPC a little underweight so that if I decided to remove my Leupold Competition 45X45 and add a March in the future, I'd still be able to make weight. Give him a call for his magic formula: http://www.stevensaccuracy.com/

I can't say where to put it but can offer this experience. I just replace my 18 oz scope on my LV with a 25 oz scope. I did not notice it being any more top heavy, especially shooting off bags. Just adding that 7 oz really helped with free recoil shooting though. Was amazed it made that much difference. So regardless of where you end up putting it, I would add it some where.
