I walked into the local gun shop….

Yup, it’s gotten crazy. I remember, years ago, walking past the racks of $400 Marlins and Winchesters at the local Cabela’s while I was on a search for my next bolt gun in some Magnum cartridge. How the wheel turns!
And Cabela's doesn't have near the amount of used FAs they used to have. Like you said, used to be racks of them, not too long ago.

The Cabelas near me used to stack the used guns in the back room until the fall and then brought them back out to sell. All the shoppers that couldn't afford a new gun had plenty of used ones to choose from.

Lever actions were under priced for decades from a manufacturing standpoint.

Of course I will. Right now, it’s the new gun. I’ll shoot it for a while, the shine will wear off and it will sit in the safe for a while. At some point in the future, I’ll pull it out again and continue the cycle.
I just pulled an old Swedish M38 out of the safe and loaded some fresh rounds for it. I haven’t shot it in about 5 years. Neat old gun.
It’s how I acquired my collection. I’m starting to sell some that I’m not so interested in anymore.

DON"T DO IT. As soon as it is gone it will be worth twice what you sold it for. That said by a guy that got a rifle out of the safe and worked up enough ammo to do a ladder test. It had a piece of blue masking tape on the butt stock, "Cleaned July 23 2016." I always pull the tape off when i shoot one, as it is not clean anymore.

Yesterday I was digging around in the safe and found a Ruger 44 magnum carbine. It’s one of the nicer models with the finger grooves in the fore arm. I looked it up on Gunbroker and “they” are asking $1500+ for them. It’s a neat little gun and I’ll be keeping it.

Shoot Josh hang one like that over the fireplace or something and enjoy looking at it too.

I feel your pain Josh. I'm down sizing as well. Then I spot that 1909 Argentine Mauser in the guns for sale section of this website. Then a Colt King Cobra in 22 LR caught my eye a LGS. Then I was trying to decide what I would shoot the 500+ rounds of 45 Colt I had loaded though besides the Schofield so I ordered an 1885 High Wall. The High Wall should arrive tomorrow at the LGS then the 15 waiting period in the Peoples Republic of Washington begins... To be fair to myself, I sold a Browning 525 with 32 inch barrels and an adjustable comb the other day. That paid for the Mauser and the Colt. 3 in and 1 out is not the direction I was heading however. :(

So for loads with 45 Colt I did some testing a couple of years ago. With Trail Boss as the powder and standard 250 grain lead bullets I got 827 fps with 6 grains, 910 fps with 7 grains and 996 fps with 8 grains. I settled on 7 grains so I didn't stress the Schofield. I'm hoping for at least 1000 fps out of the 30 inch barrel on the High Wall with that same load. I'll keep the load the same so no one accidentally loads a hot round intended for the 1885 into a pistol. I really like Trail Boss as a powder for 45 Colt. It is really fluffy stuff and it would be very noticeable if you accidentally double charged. Other powders are so low on fill you can hardly tell if you dropped powder. Unique for example.

Have fun with it and yeah, if you want to load hot you can't load 45 Colt nearly to the level a a 454 Casull.

I’d like to see picks of that High Wall!
I’ve settled on the “Ruger/Thompson loads for the Rossi. I’ll find the best loads on a target and chrono them. Should be between 12-1400 fps. It’s the only Colt chambered gun I own so no chance of a mix up. That load will have me a little under 44 Magnum pressures. The gun is heavy enough, so the steel butt plate should be tolerable.

do you got a horse, cowboy hat and boots? i know you got the pistols and holsters!

and spied a Rossi Model 1892 in the rack. Stainless steel, with a 24 inch octagonal barrel in 45 Colt. I know Rossi has a cloudy reputation but the 92s are supposed to be one of the better guns they produced. With the dies and some brass sitting in a drawer back in the shop, I figured what the hell.
I’ve been researching the strength of the gun for loading purposes. They offer the 92 in 454 Casull, so it seems to be capable of handling the hotter +P loads.
I bought a couple boxes of factory ammo to start with and to get some more brass. The box states they’ll hit 750 fps. That seems a bit anemic.
Anybody out there load for one of these guns? Any input?
Thanks in advance.
another one coming upIMG_0900.jpeg

I shot the Rossi at the new range today. I have a project! Factory “Cowboy Action” 250 grain cartridges @ 750 fps (written on the box) combined with open sights gave me a shotgun pattern at 50 yards. I’m waiting on bullets so I can reload for it. I think I’ll get a peep sight too. Played with the elevation a little. The high clusters were the first shots at the lowest orange dot, then more as I moved the ramp. Felt like shooting a 22. Finally got it “zeroed in”.:(:rolleyes:

Not in my possession yet. Pick it up the 20th. Long waits here in WA. More of an attack on law abiding citizens than a crime prevention thing. This was checking it out at the LGS as I was inspecting it.
