I REMEMBER WHEN

I remember stopping on the way back from an all night headboat bluefishing trip and stopping at a diner and swapping some fish for breakfast. Did the same on the way back from the Susquehanna with carp and swapping them for pizza at a shop Greeks owned. Doubt we could pull that off today.

I remember when we could walk around the neighborhood with are BB, pellet rifles and 22's and Dad's old military gear. No one called the police on us. We did have some grown up's tell us,"don't kill any thing if you aren't going to eat it". A couple old ladies yell,"don't shoot any birds". I could tell a story about what my Dad did to me when I shot a Cardinale. Never shot a bird after that, that I never ate. Good old Pop. nilebartram

I remember being with my grandfather at the Wetern Auto when he bought a new nylon 66 for $ 49 .
The gun slayed a jillion jack rabbits.
I have the 66 and it still runs flawlessly.
Here is a recent photo.
Unfortunately, I also remember when Western Auto and Montgomery Wards had 30 gal. cardboard soapboxes filled with 1903's, Mausers, Mannlichers, and other surplus rifles for $29.00-$49.00 and my dad saying I couldn't spend my money on them because those were 'no good'. Remington 700 was the only rifle you should ever get...

I remember waking up to the sound of birds chirping coming in through the wide-open bedroom windows as the sun was rising. It was Saturday and my Dad was off work. Going outside to a beautiful blue sky with a German Shepard named Heidi. Turning out our saddle horse “Lucky” to her paddock. A great big vegetable garden with corn, beans, squash, melons, tomatoes, onions...you name it. Apple trees, peach trees, pear trees. My Dad and his walk-behind David Bradley tractor, with all the attachments. A 1955 Chevy sedan that pulled a trailer and a Chevy station wagon. A new garage. Actually this was no particular Saturday, it could be one of many that at the time seemed countless, endless.

I remember the blossoming fruit trees in the springtime. I remember bees in the clover. Flower gardens. Lightning bugs in the evening in July. Fires in the fireplace in the fall and winter and all the family together in the living room. No cell phones, no video games, and the TV was for special occasions; turn it on to watch one show and then it was off until tomorrow. Board games, conversations. Snow on the ground all winter long. I remember birthdays and Christmas. Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Little League (Hardball! Softball was for girls). Church on Sunday.

How I would like to go back, just for a short visit. To see it all again, to hear it and feel it and smell it. Several years ago at a 40 year high school reunion I reconnected with former classmates and friends and we all keep in touch today (Facebook!). We all agree, we were very fortunate to grow up when and where we did and wouldn't change any of it.

…and all of the foregoing is what you write about when you took an afternoon nap and then can't fall asleep at 11 PM!

Brother, you bring tears to my eyes! I remember those days, think of them often. Thanks for that!

In my youth I remember how democrats valued freedom, god and country. They fought cold and hot wars against collectivist ideologies that had eliminated freedom for their people and god from the state. They eventually destroyed their countries via collectivist economic policy. Now the democrats have become their former enemies and are on the same path to self destruction they were.

A variation on the I Remember theme, I tell people I was probably 10 or 12 years old before I learned "dirtydamdemocrats" was not all one word! ( my dad again...)

I remember the inspiration one particular democrat provided that ended up resulting in the pinnacle achievement of mankind to date, landing a man on the moon. That same democrat faced off against the Russians in the Cuban Missile Crisis risking nucelar war in the process. One act took great immignation, the other took big harry balls. He was the reason I was a democrat when I was young. Those democrats no longer exist. Neither do any republicans of that caliber.

Of all the things I remember from my youth, staring up at the moon from my back yard and realizing that two people were up there walking around ranks as the most significant. I was a young teenager but I remember it well.
