I need a bullet puller

Thanks for looking.

I need to pull some bullets out of some loads that I didn't size properly, and have no mechanism to do so without destroying something. I'd like to re-use the bullets.

What's the best tool for this job?

I have both the Forster collet type and a hammer style puller. Both do a good job of saving the components if done with a careful touch.

Thanks for that. There appears to be two flavors of the forster: standard and universal. Any idea the difference, or your preference?

I've been pulling bullets for 40 plus years with the same RCBS collet puller and it hasn't failed me yet. Light tension on recently loaded rounds and the bullets are pristine, but those old loads, that are neck welded, will take maximum pressure and bullets are only good for foulers, if that.

+1
You can find puller from 13-20 dollars. Collets run 10 to 13.

If you use a hammer type, put a pad of sorts in the bottom to not damage the bullets.

If you just want to move a bullet out a bit, without losing the powder, inside the hammer add a few metal or plastic tubes with a soft rubber washer at the top. I play with the max distance I want the bullet to move and then stop inside the rubber washer. No powder loss and then you can re-seat it to the depth you want.

Never damage and always re-use the bullets.

For nasty, old crimped seated things you need a collet puller.

I have both the Forster collet type and the Quinetics hammer puller. I like them both but the hammer is fast to use for just a quick couple of pull downs. Early on, the hammers aluminum 3 pc. segmented collet failed with the rim grip ears shearing off. The mfg. wanted $15.00 for a replacement. BS....I made one out of steel. It will never break.DSC02476.JPG

The Hornady cam lock puller is the easiest and best I have used on normal rounds, now match rounds the plier type that you get from various places like sinclairs etc work good.

I use the hammer and an rcbs collet puller.
From my experience, bullets seated with light to medium neck tension, both works well.
For old and crimped rounds, both works, but the collet puller destines most bullets to be fouler shooters.

I use an old inertia (hammer) puller with foam in the tube to prevent bullet damage. I threw the old collet style holder away and just use the shell holder that matches the particular cartridge. Easier to use.

Been using the Hornady for a few years. No need to change. I seat my bullets with little tension so, the bullets are fine to reuse.

I have both the hammer style and I got a grip and pull it seems to do a good job. You can pull ,ost bullets with the standard model. RW

I've had an RCBS collet for decades - from back when it was the only one available here - and I hate it. You need three hands -
  • one to lever the bullet into position
  • one to hold the sleeve (?body)
  • one to turn the lock lever
I saw one of the cam lock ones a while back & wished they were around when I bought mine.

I believe the standard unit is for standard single stage presses and the universal is for the Forster co-ax press. One has a handle to tighten the collet on the bullet and the other a hex nut. I've never used the unit with the hex nut so I wouldn't know how good it works, but the handle type work well.

My son has a Hornady cam lock and I find it also works very good. I find it a tad more complicated to set up from collet to collet but all the same it works good.
