I goofed on my 6mm Rem.

I had originally planned on a 6mmBR but gunsmith said it may cause feeding issues
PT&G makes very nice single shot followers for Remingtons. I don’t really think you give up much going to a single shot. Lot of flexibility in COAL in going that route.

I believe the 6mm will give you more “bang for the buck” than the 243, specially if you handload.
Shot a 6MM Rem for many years. It's a real barrel burner for a varmint rifle. Don't know if you can find brass. I always called it the Rem version of a 243 Win.

OK, I had a favorite Remington Model 7 in 7/08. It accounted for many deer and was a joy to hunt with. One year after many years of use I had a sling swivel mishap that caused my rifle to drop from my deer stand thus busting my beautiful stock and putting an end to my hunting with that rifle. I replaced it with another 7/08 in a 700 Mountain rifle. The model 7 set dormant for a few years and I read an article about a model 7 converted to a 7mm BR. I thought a 6mm BR might be a handy walking varmint gun for a Summer passion of hunting groundhog. I purchased a 12 twist Hart barrel searched for a gunsmith. My gunsmith gave me the impression the 6mmBR may exhibit feeding issues and encouraged me to chamber it in a .243 Win. Never a fan of the .243 Win I opted for the 6mm Rem. I don't hunt with it as perhaps I should but I have limited loading the 85gr Sierra Game King due to the slower twist. I have not tried a heavier round. I am now at the point to just have it rebarreled into my favorite deer round the 7/08 and a 20 inch barrel. This was a goof I would rather fix now and be able to enjoy it as I once did for many seasons. Am I crazy?
7/08 is nice but
I like the 260 lots better - in an 8 twist
it has long range capability and accuracy with less recoil
---
if you want to take advantage of the highest BC 7mm bullets, it wont work in a short action
when the 260 can
---
260 AI would be even better

The Speer 90gr Hot Core SP was made for 12 twist. My 244 722 stabilized the Norma 100gr Oryx semi-pointed at 100yds. , nice round holes. Both should be just fine for deer; I will be hunting with the 90s in a few days I hope! Let ‘er rip! The Norma’s chronographed 3000fps over some 40 year old IMR 4831 out of the factory 26” barrel

How about a 6 GT in lieu of 6 BR …. Possibly just enough to feed well and with 80-90 gr bullets in your 12 twist barrel I d guess it d make a fine varminter … std throat length of 6 GT might be only issue for shorter / lighter bullets.

Anyway, a thought.

Technically, you have a 244 Remington with that 1-12 twist barrel. Remington introduced the 6mm Rem with a 1-10 twist so it would handle heavier bullets.
Ran into that personally. Bought a custom "6mm Rem" and it would barely stay on target with 105s. Eventually the penny dropped and we measured the twist- yep, one in 12 :(
The first 85gr load I tried in it was well sub-inch.

I reccomend trying the Sierra #1520, this is an 85gr flat based spitzer. Shoots better than anything I've tried in my 10 twist M70 Sporter Varmint and performs very well on game.
Good luck,
Aaron

The Sierra 85g HPBT shoot well in my 1/12" 6mm-250, so do the Speer 85g SPBT. I haven't killed anything with it yet, so can't comment on performance, but the internet is full of info on the bullet's "impact" on animals.

Love the 6mm Remington. Choose it over the 243 years ago. Mine is in a 700 BDL Varmint. Loaded mine with 70 grain ballistic tips for prairie dogs when I want to reach out a little further. I know I should be using a bigger bullet but just didn't get there. I would go with a faster twist and stay with the 6mm Remington.
