"I don't shoot paper"

No joke here, I have a buddy that deer hunts with a 416 Weatherby Magnum and 350g Barnes TSX. Best part is 95% of the areas we hunt in northern Michigan are fairly heavily wooded and almost every shot under 150 yards. Thing sounds like a cannon going off and from 100 yards it blows a baseball size exit hole.

Likes to pre tenderize that meat I reckon!

Range rats. Went to a range twice. Never again. I pull out my iPhone and proceed to show all the head shots I did on deer not to mention the two head shots on ground hogs I took at 130. Then I say you got pics like this?

BIL was alus crowing about how he thought it was a waste of time and money shooting at paper targets. “It’s got to have hair on it”!
Well we went to visit once and he was trying to figure out how to patch a hole in his generator’s gas tank. I inquired as to what happened? Come to find out he was shooting at an armadillo one night and got the generator. I asked how much hair did you see?

I was shooting last Saturday at the public PA Game Lands Range. A wife and husband walked by, coming from the 50 yard range. She saw my rifle, yellow, and commented to her husband that it was fancy and nice.

He said I must be a f#@, and anyone who would carry that in the woods had to be stupid. (his words).

I guess shooting Fred Sinclair's personal rifle, painted by Becky in 1980's is lost on him.

I was equally unimpressed with his chitcom AK variant.

A little bit of a different perspective.
At The Tomball Gun Club, we have 300 members. Of that 300, around 15 are dedicated Benchrest Shooters, mostly Varmint for Score. I am one of the few dedicated to both Score and Group Shooting.

Often I will be shooting one of my Competition Rifles, sometimes my Rail Gun. Fellow shooters will come over and marvel at the thing, and after looking through the scope, will be amazed at the accuracy, or level of precision that it is capable of.

That is when I explain to them that as impressive as the thing may be, a Rail Gun is a singular purpose piece of equipment that is designed to do one thing very well. That being, shoot competitive 10 shot groups under Match conditions at 100/200/300 yards. It is in fact useless for just about any thing else. If it won’t do that, about all it is is a 90 pound door stop.

I alaways try to find something positive to say about what ever a fellow shooter is shooting. If a fellow shooter is having problems, I always take the time to be as helpful as possible, never in a condescending manner. I would expect anybody to help me in the same manner.

I admire any good shooting firearm that performs well in the venue that it was designed for.

One time shot next to a guy getting ready for deer season. He had a pencil barrelled 270. He would shoot, ratchet on the scope, shoot- ratchet on the scope. After 20 rounds declared "That's close enough" and left. When I went down to score and paste my target, I looked at his; a paper plate with 4 holes in no manner of a group whatsoever. "Close enough"? 4 of 20 on a 10" plate at 100 yards! Hope he can track a blood trail IF he manage to hit the animal. Just simply bewildering.

Twenty years ago all I shot was factory ammo. I had no idea what was possible and today I am seldom satisfied with loads that won't hold 1/2MOA to 200. I grew a lot but that is because I've been blessed with the desire and ability to learn. Not everyone has the skill set required or the motivation.
Be polite and ask them if they'd like to send a few down range. You may have just made a friend.

I have invited friends to my Club in the past for both pre-season sighting in and zero verification. Sometimes I am working on their equipment more than mine. I, too, use the 25 yd starting point when getting them started, and checking my own rifles/pistols.

Of course, I check their ring screws for security, and proper inch pound torque.
I also check their optic for rear objective focus and eye relief/shooting form before their first shot. I’ve had a few “magnum eyebrows” bestowed on my guests from their poor mounting; the butterfly strips and compression bandages in my range bag stopped the bleeding quickly.
Always happy to give guidance where I can, but I suppress my urge to interfere with my “assistance” if unsolicited.
I have certainly shot more paper over the last 57 years of range trips and multiple disciplines of Marksmanship pursuits, and I continue to do so. Likely the ratio is near 10K to each round fired to take a Game animal or Varmint.
Usually my guests or Fellow Club Members who are receptive to my offers are more than satisfied with the end result down range performance.
Of course, I have a bit of fun with them before we pack up, and the “Shoot for Guns” challenge is proffered by me. They chuckle when my T/C Contender Super 14 in .30-30 is my choice, but their amusement fades when my groups are smaller than their rifle’s at 100 yds. The look of worried consternation on their faces is priceless, but I let them off the hook with only my lunch bill:).
They typically wind up on the range far more now that their equipment is properly secured/zeroed and likewise enjoy the experience more as well.
I was blessed with great tutors and I try to pay it forward.

This is one reason i drive 1 1/2 hours to get to a secluded range away from my local range. I see too many guys out there all times of the year with their rifles shooting cheep factory ammo at 100 yards and happy with a 2 1/2 inch group. Some i can tell wanna hunt, scary to me. I want the smallest group possible from my hunting rifles so i know its on me to put it in the right spot. One day i was at that range. Had my 6br checking some loads. During a seas fire guy asked me what the hell i was shooting. I told him. He said you are making just one hole down there, told him was just checking on a good load for it, he said well i think you found it.
