I Don't Get It

Those of us who have ended up in the old school shooting hobby got there from a variety of influences. The guys that this thread is about have had a different set of experiences, and it is those experiences and exposures that have made them what they are. Basically it looks to me like they are totally devoid of any family background relating to shooting and hunting, and have picked up everything that they know off of the internet, and each other, the blind leading the blind. As long as they are safe, having a good time, their votes support the second amendment, and their money various ranges I think that we should be glad that they are around, no matter how pointless their take on shooting seems to be. Our republic is ruled based on the expressed will of voters, and any cause or constitutional right that attracts too few supporters may cease to exist. I have been on the board of a large rifle and pistol club that is open to the public and members six days a week, and run by paid employees, several at a time. There are multiple facilities on 222 acres, serving members, so called daily shooters, and various types of competition. The whole thing is virtually paid for by Joe average shooter who pays by the day to exercise his enthusiasms and exorcise his demons, within the rules of the range. Without his money, and vote paying the bills and keeping the antigunners at bay would be a lot more difficult.

I like making noise with my AR. It's like fireworks but better. I DO aim small with a good optic and trigger and have a brass catcher hanging off the side. But i also enjoy the blast of muzzle breaks. Yeah.......I like things that go BOOM,,,,,,,,,

I once made a living with a M-16 and it served it's purpose well. I will also admit that on certain days, I went thru a lot of magazines.I don't remember having the desire to fire one in 47 years.
Everyone has the right to engage in the shooting sport, as they wish, as long as they practice the safety rules. Some do not!
I have witnessed too many AR & AK muzzles pointed down the shooting line while uncleared. Also shooting cross range, shooting expensive wind indicators and shooting others targets. That's not counting hot brass in the collars of other shooters.
I put up with it and try to control my reactions, but it's gets dangerous sometimes and the RSO has to step in. I try to wait them out or pack up and leave.
Now I shoot primarily on a bolt gun only range or only hit the closer public range on Mondays, while they are rebuilding their ammo stash.
Let's hope they all develop into conscientious shooters as they mature, cause the black guns are here to stay.
My thoughts are not meant to apply to competent users of AR type rifles.

If they are following the range rules and practicing firearm safety then I say to each their own. I'm not one of those guys, the only mags I've unloaded as fast as I can have been 10/22 mags and I still enjoy doing that today at times. Burning up center fire barrels and making them group like buckshot isn't something I can afford or would do if I could but if gets some people into firearms than I'm ok with it. Maybe after they get that out of their system they go on to enjoy other firearm activities. If they are not obeying the range rules, being unsafe in any way then they should not be allowed to endanger others, period.

In my 50 years of shooting i never thought about.buying an AR. Well everyone has one so i decided to see what i was missing. So about 3 years ago i bought my first AR. Souped up .22. It was a fun gun to shoot but never could get the accuracy i wanted out of it. Never was into mag dumps. They are fun to build. Built several for precision shooting. Hard to get consistent accuracy. Bought a 6mm AR upper from Robert Whitley and found out they can be very accurate. But for me they are awkward to shoot, don't work well off the bench, tear up brass and they are ugly as sin. Kind of drifted away from them.

I travel with my job so i mostly shoot at public ranges. I would say 80% of the rifles are ARs. They set their targets at 50 yards and can barely keep their rounds on one of those man size zombies they love to shoot. They look at my bench gun like some exotic animal. Political fear tactics sure has been good for black rifle sales. I too hope that many of them will grow in their shooting skills and have the opportunity to join our sport.

I rarely shoot at a public range as I have my own private range.

The times I have been to a public range I have never once heard one of the young guys having fun with their AR15 criticize someone shooting a bolt action precision rifle.

Seems hypocritical to me for a shooter of one discipline to criticize one from another. At the end of the day we are all enjoying our firearms and with all the attacks on our 2A rights in the past few years I want to see as many new shooters enter the sport/hobby as possible.

Nothing better than putting balloons out at 300yds and letting my nephew blast away .The smile on his face after he figures the 12 to 16 hold over is priceless.If you think thats bad you definitely don't want to be at Camp Perry for the battle rattle,mag dumps and running with their gun.
The claims of accuracy or lack of it are funny,perhaps you should look at the daily bulletin and see what has been accomplished with an Ar.
For those who haven't figured it out yet the Ar is not designed to be fired from a rest & bags. I was once told by an older gentleman "that bench will tell you what your gun will do now stand up and show me what you can do".

Since we have clubs in my state we have many shooters who shoot different guns and different styles. Many are ex military and like to get out to shoot some mags up to let off some steam. I don't care as long as nobody is endangered by what they choose to do. If I had enough money to buy some land and shoot with like minded shooters I would do that but for now it is what it is as far as fast shooting or wrecking their barrels. I cant see why it is worth getting upset about as long as I am not getting hot brass thrown all over me. Most will calm down their rapid fire if you just talk to them like a gentleman and explain what they are doing that they are doing to make your day less enjoyable. So in the end most people are out for a bit of fun and don't want to harm anyone, so sit back and wait till they leave, take their brass and call it good.

Like most everyone here, I chase accuracy and precision but a mag dump now and then can be good therapy. With a little practice, one can keep them pretty tight, too.

Not in the same vein, but in one of the clubs I belong, it schedules a full auto day (every Wednesday afternoon) and watch the guys wheel a hand cart full of ammo cans with .45 ACP for the Thompsons and 5.56 for the M16s. They lay out a sheet to catch the brass and blast away! They do shoot at targets and are safe but the noise kind of wears on me and no, they keep the brass.

Getting back to the mag dumpers, I love 'em! 215 rds. of Lake City in the bucket last time and over 500 rds. a couple other times. And don't get your shorts all twisted at just the black gun crowd. The pistol range has their share of shoot 'em ups too. The Glock fanboys especially seem to be all about firepower.

Having said all that, they are in the very least, going to be aware of and support the 2nd Amendment.

As long as everything is done safely I have zero objections. They may look at me with a single shot rifle and figure I'm the odd one....I don't know.
If they are involved with shooting and it's done safely I'm for it.

I've got this cousin, anti-gun gluten free hipster always trying to tell me about my privilege. About 5 years back she was going on and on at Christmas about politics so I loaded up a select fire M4 and got her to shoot it. Never seen such a quick turnaround. So if blasting black guns at the range is the way to get people to shut up about global warming than I support it.

My grandfather use to say "If we were all alike, we'd all drive green Fords". I count my blessings that Plinkers, competitive shooters, and everywhere in between are out shooting. It supports the economy, supports the outdoor industry and helps create tax revenue for wildlife funding. As long as they're safe and don't destroy the range, they're good in my book.
