I Don't Get It

I grew up with the benefit of my father's tutelage concerning precision shooting. Started loading my own ammo @ 16. I'm now pushing 60. In all that time I've owned many bolt, lever, & single shot rifles--all with the intent to shoot bug hole groups. Never interested in an AR/semi-auto centerfire---until recently. I try to befriend almost any @ my local range & come to the conclusion that these young AR shooters just want to have fun & truly enjoy our shooting sport. By far, most are respectful, rule abiding members. (There's always the one that thinks it's MY responsibility to keep their brass from hitting me). Perhaps, as one wise poster mentioned earlier, they simply follow what they see on the internet or what their friends do(blind leading the blind). So, to keep things interesting I built my own version of a precision AR 223. I must say--It's FUN! No blasting or plinking--all with a precision goal in mind. This has renewed my interest in shooting again. A new(to me) facet of the activity I fell in love with more than 40 yrs ago.

I watch the "kids" at the range ( and a few older guys, sometimes) blast away. I just smile and wait for them to leave thier brass. It's nice when they do. I watched a guy dump about 8 mags in a 308 and leave it. Too bad it was an HK. I think it's a phase a lot of us go thru. I went thru mine in the seventies, tho. Open sights, farm ponds and snapping turtles. Fond memories.

I may be in my second childhood (past retirement age) but it's fun once or twice a year just to go out and shoot when it doesn't matter how well you do. I occasionally dump a magazine in my AR and SKS but then let either cool down. Have to take care of the hardware. Fun to shoot a .22LR rifle or 12G shotgun with slugs at 200 yards. I tried my .040 cal PT100 Taurus at 200. A humbling experience. I only hit 50% on a full size piece of posterboard with my forearm resting. The front site was larger than the posterboard at that distance. Some Tannerite is fun once in a while too. But I never leave a piece of brass behind!

I too am amused by those "young guns" who show up with an AR and a ammo box full of 223 or 308 and it's obvious they've never handled a firearm before. They slap in 15 or 50 round magazine and see how fast they can empty it, never even coming close to the target. I just sit back and watch the brass fly....if indeed it is brass and not steel.

I chalk it up to a whole generation of first person view video games that glorified spraying bullets everywhere while hoping to hit the bad guy. Unlimited magazines and no barrel heat to worry about...just like real life...right?
