I CANT LOAD ANY BETTER

I went to the range today. Took my 6BR. Remington 700, Bartlein barrel, Jewel trigger with 1/8 twist. I chronographed a five shot group with a Magnetospeed and this was the result of the five shot group.

2925, 2924, 2926, 2923 and 2923.

Below is the exact load I used and is posted in an article on this site as an ideal load using Varget and 105 Scenar bullets. Averaged to 2925. That's a 3 FPS spread. Hard to believe I was able to load to such an exacting weight.

3 FPS is fine but what was the group size?

i have not been able to get a five shot ES that close- great job ill keep trying. what was the barrel length?

Best I got was a 130gr compressed max 308 load with 6fps ES that shoots cloverleafs straight outta a ADI loading book. I not touching it ! !

Nice Nick. I like to look at ES and/or SD on a minimum of 10 shots; but your 5 shots are very tight.
Dave

Barrel length is 28in. I use an RCBS 1500 and then double check with an Ohaus 1010 that Scott worked over. I did lot of testing today and that group was .215. Five groups with that load was ..356. I will post target tomorrow. Left it in the truck when I came in this afternoon. I now have a total of 122 shots from this rifle.

I also tested Shooters World 062. At 30.3 gr was 200 FPS slower. I shot 4 groups at increasing powder weight and at 31.5, it was 2912, 2908,2910, 2911 and 2912. Groups got progressively smaller as I increased to load. A few more tenths of a grain and I think it will do as good as Varget.

Nick its great when that happens, it means you have a good grasp on making consistent reloads.
You need to test larger batches of ammo to see if it holds water or is a fluke.

What's maddening is going home and loading another batch
and they don't repeat.....
Sometimes if you just find the right load good things happen.
Caliber .223, four different days.

Consistent speed doesn’t mean anything if it doesn’t shoot good on paper.

So don’t be fooled by the false hype. Chronographs can throw you off and lead you astray. I only use chronographs to get an average speed and watch velocity gains with charge increases to know when I’m approaching max pressure. I never care what my ES and SD are. I only care about what shows up on the paper because I’ve had a lot of loads over the years with a 20+ fps ES shoot way smaller than loads with 3 fps ES. Sometimes my best groups have a small ES, sometimes they have a fairly large ES. Doesn’t matter one bit to me so long as the rifle is accurate and consistent.

A good tune doesn’t care about ES and SD. The barrel will let you know what it likes, NOT the numbers that pop up on an electronic device ‘attempting’ to precisely measure the velocity of a very small projectile traveling thousands of feet per second.

That is what I’m finding with Shooters World Powder, the velocity is 100-200 fps slower and you have to keep bumping up the charge to try to get to top velocities. Precision, Long Rifle, and SW4350.

I don't usually pay attention to velocity. the point of this exorcise was to compare Varget with Shooters World. With the load I have been using, bullet, powder and primer, most everyone is getting from 2890 to 2930 FPS in various setups. Last week I loaded some shooters World and it was 200 FPS lower than Varget. So this week, I ran a ladder test of shooters World to see what it needed to match Varget. I am about .2 gr short of getting there. I have used a lot of Shooters World in place of Varget and always get good results

I will go back to the range in a few days, weather permitting and run some more tests. Luckily I have lots of both powders and a little of 1,000 Lapua Scenar bullets. I enjoy testing new ideas. It's part of shooting. Right now, Varget is the cat's meow and the 105 Lapus is the right bullet. Time will tell.

.....and ALL of these electronic devices use components, with acceptable tolerances of 1/2/5/10/15/20 % !!!
