Now that is funny. But this is no laughing matter and now a chemical plant is burning. I hope they can get it under control.

Decades ago when my family was considering buying property near the ocean in Massachusetts my dad pointed out places that were devastated by the real bad hurricane of 1938 (category 4-5). At one place, sort of an island connected to the mainland by a causeway, everything was swept clean by a close to 20 foot storm surge and 125-140 mph winds. Looking at places in the town where we selected we noticed that the old-timers built their houses usually 25-50 feet above sea level but avoided building them on top of hills. While visiting a museum near Boston I looked at early 1900's photos of damage, busted up stumps and fallen trees, from a real bad hurricane that hit Massachusetts in the early 1600's. Back then old growth forests stood with 3-4 foot diameter trees.

Now there are houses that are less than 8 feet above sea level allowed by building code variances. Everybody wants a place near the water or a water view, like 1000's of them less than 20 feet above sea level. The same island that was swept clean by the 1938 storm surge is crowded by buildings with an estimated median value of $800,000 on 1/2 acre or less lots.

When will the next real big one hit? 2020-1938 = 82 years.

Yup , I'd believe it . The rates pushed sky high by the same morons that have to have a "Beach-front" location . And when it gets blown away , they will want "We the tax-paying People" to pay for their loss . Like the same-same Morons that keep rebuilding on a flood plain after being flooded out four or five times . And demanding Federal funds to re-build , again . The Feds should just buy the land , and force them to move . End of drain on the tax-payers . IMO !

This reminds me of a few years ago when I visited where I grew up. I went to check out where I raced Motocross, thinking that since those places flooded every few years, it must still be motocross tracks, no one in their right mind would ever build on those flood plains with all the evidence of past flooding. How wrong I was, the tracks were now replaced by expensive housing estates. When we got out for a walk, a local told us it wont flood here anymore because climate change will reduce the amount of rain. When it flooded badly the next year, you can guess what they blamed the floods on.

I slept through the second half of Hugo.
After 33 yrs of the Hurricane Boogie every other year, I moved back to southern IN.
I sure don't miss it.
