Hunting coyotes

If I could get a photo to upload on this site, I would show you some coyote's the were plenty DOA with a 17 HMR, called in and with in 100 yrds or less. Bill K

ive killed a couple hundred coyotes, everything from 22lr to 300wsm. While a 17 hmr can kill them, the shot has to be perfectly in the vitals or a head shot. I don’t do head shots. My 17-223 runs a 25gr bullet at just over 4000 FPS, put that in the shoulder and you still have a runner. 17 hmr runs what, a 17 gr bullet at 3000fps? Sure it may do it, but far from the best choice.

Does that driveway sensor have a little red light on it? If so I had one that the red light spooked the coyotes so I had to cover it up. JME. WD
I mentioned that in my earlier post, I could see the coyotes scare away when it blinked as I had trail cams taking video. Also you can see some weird light effects on the video when 2 trail cameras overlap their IR lights.

I’d be getting up bright and early and then again just before dark 40 mins roughly and set up with an e-caller to start. If they are use to feeding in the area start with something soft and low volume and work your way up from there. Eventually you’ll get them to come in. If they haven’t been hunted before then it should be pretty quick

I don’t own an e-caller and this place is right next to an Interstate (noisy ) and the woods are very thick so I couldn’t see them. My feeling is pattern them feeding ( if they feed) and get set up and wait.

I was not saying it is the best choice either. I am just saying, that to those that say it is not enough and will not kill a coyote, they have not hunted them, or used the HMR within it's given range. Same could go for how many deer could prove how deadly a very small caliber ( 22lr for one) is in the hands of a hunter that puts the bullet in the kill zone. And also just compare how many seals and even polar bears have and are still killed by natives and other hunters with the so called under powered 222 rem. Again hunters that take the time, place the bullet in the right spot, can and will kill anything walking the face. You don't have to have the latest super zombie magnum, if you have the skill to place the bullet, where it should go.

Update: not a single coyote has come in to feed. Not even a coon on camera. May have to put out meat scraps or something. Smart little buggers.

I hunted this evening and missed. New rifle,( on 4 rounds thru it) new scope. And got buck fever. Dog gone it.
Trying to load video and can’t seem to do it. Not sure why.

This what i keep getting. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

maybe load it to a file sharing site ??

what gun did you end up going with ? distance ?

I ended up using a new Savage Axis in 300 blk.. HSM ammo with Vmax bullet / I sighted it in this morning and was about 4" low and 2" right at 100.. Explains why I missed the little bugger..

Patience Grasshopper, they'll be back. Be sure to check where it shoots at 25 and 50 yds. The closest shots are always the ones shoot over or under. Aim center mass!

I videoed the hunt with my thermal. Pulsar. I am unable to post the video here. Is there a place I can learn how to do this? Or maybe I can email someone the video and you can post it? Drives me nuts. Yes, I’m stupid. Just can’t figure it out. I can’t seem to save it with out it linking to my spectrum email.

His must have been fighting, his ears were cut up. Oh and stink. Man did he stink. I did make a hole in him that might have played a part.

We put up the motion sensors in a large triangle, alerted us to the coyotes. We put up a false door on the back of the house with a shooting hole, had bench and rest set up, rifle at the ready, round in the chamber, bolt up. Alarms went off at all times.

Coyotes are very protective of their food, watch for the Dominant Male that is running all the rest off, shoot him first, be patient. Then the others will come in and stay. Some coyotes are gluttons, while others like to grab a mouth full and run off.

KEY, DARK RED flood lights, come on when the sensor alerts, coyotes can not see the color red. The lighter the color red, the more apt they are to sense that "something is just not right". They can see Green, Orange, for sure. You may have to go to an arts and craft store where they sell stained glass and buy some dark red paint for the flood lights...it works.

Just shoot them in the lungs with a 22 RF, standard velocity if you have neighbor concerns. RWS Sub Sonic HP are really great for this application. We did not stick the muzzle out of the false door.

Check with your local laws to make sure this is legal.

We set up a bait trap at Sun Set, sardines in oil. We would pour several cans of sardine oil down tree trunks where the scent would really catch the wind, then just put the sardines in dog food that we bought by the 50 lb sack, scatter the dog food within the triangle, not all dumped out in a pile...make them work for it.

This will probably be an on going effort as you have to reduce the coyote population by 75% from year to year to keep the population level, and this just is not going to happen unless you are dedicated, the wife may get to where she hates being woke up by the Alert.

Best time to reduce numbers is Late July to Sept 1, yearlings are dumb as dirt, kill'em all!
