A long while back, (in NE PA, gun season) I watched an orchestrated attack by coyotes on a group of deer. Was sitting on an old rock wall, downwind of a swampy thicket. The deer were using that area as a safe haven, so I was watching the entry/egress to it on a single digit morning, hoping to catch a good buck in the open...
Anyhoo, once daylight broke, I noticed several deer milling around in the thicket. A skiff of fresh snow on the ground offered the contrast needed to help betray their presence. Before I knew it, at least THREE different coyotes were converging on that thicket, all from different angles off the far ridge. One nearly stepped ON me, and spooked when it caught my wind! Meanwhile, the other coyotes dove into the thicket, sending deer every which way! Had a bunch of deer and another coyote come blasting right past me & thru a low spot in the rock wall I was sitting against! Man, get my heart pumpin' just remembering that morning...
But, yeah, I don't think our coyotes have any problem taking deer, whenever they want.
Take a look at this stud, caught on my trail cam. That's a sho'nuff deer killer, right there...
And another, wouldn't doubt if it's his mate...
BTW, NO BAIT at that spot, of any kind. That is a deer intersection, the coyotes are simply keeping tabs on their next meal...
