For you short range BR shooters, how short of a barrel would you go to if you needed to make weight?
Would you go as short as 20", 21" ? Regardless of caliber be it 6mm or 30 cal. group or score, 100, 200, 300 yard does it matter?
Inquiring mind wants to know.

IIRC, in the article about the Houston Warehouse, they determined 21 3/4" as the optimum barrel length for their guns.

Depends of course which contour you're wanting to use (straight taper, HV, LV, Remington Varmint etc) and still make weight, but around 20-23" is a ballpark guess. I have them as short as 20" and as long as 22 1/2. JME. WD

I have gone as short as 19-1/4" once to make weight and the gun shot very well, shooter sometimes not so much.
In my opinion there is no magic length, you just need to tune the rifle and read the flags.
Most of mine run from 20-1/2" to 21-1/2". My new Carbon Fiber barrels are 25" and weigh 4 pounds, 4 ounces.

It REALLY helps to know what your stock, action, rings, and scope all weigh, and what your current barrel weighs. That way you know what you can cut, reduce, or add to and still achieve a well balanced rifle. It can be a puzzle if this is your first time doing it. Good luck and hope it all works out for ya. Anything you cut turns out needing to be ½ inch longer - barrel, buttstock, hair, ....

20 is not too short, will work fine at 300. I have a 6ppc 20 in I shoot at 500 yds.

Wyle after reading your post I went back to the rule book and then a light went off between my ears. The book specificly states 13 1/2 lbs.
I was stuck on thinking I was close to 20 oz. over weight but am actually a little over 12oz. Now it is making more sense and is really only taking 4" off the muzzle and using a different scope and rings and bases and I should fall in a little under 13 1/2.
These damn household digital scales are done in tenths not oz..

I was going to use a 40x Leupold that weights 22oz., but I will end up using the Weaver T36 which weighs 17oz. . That change and cutting 3 1/2 - 4 1/2" off the barrel will put me under the 13 1/2 lb. limit, and 21 1/2" barrel length.

I have two light guns that both shoot the lv profiles from either Bartlein or Krieger. I cut my barrels at 21" and shoot them on either gun, they come in appx 1 oz light depending on the scale. I used to cut barrels for the lighter of the two rifles to 23" but after doing that for a couple of years I realized that having both weighted to the same number and cutting off at 21 seemed to work just fine. They get shorter when they're set back, work fine like that too.

I use single post rings and took sunshade off to make weight.
Some say 13.51 is over, some say as long as the scale doesn't say 13.6 you're good.
Every scale is supposed to has an oz error allowance in ibs rules... I was told.
