re: Purpose of the Nationals

Jim my hats off to you for making the thoughts of having such a match a reality. I have found over the years as a match director you will always have people pointing out what you need to do or how they would have done it. But you won’t find many willing to grab the bull by the horns and making the events happen. In fact it’s hard to even get people to help, it’s real easy to criticize on a forum takes hardly any effort at all. I’ll even go as far to say some folks would bitch if you hung them with a new rope . Don’t matter if it’s deer season or what part of the country you hold such a match, if your as good as you think, you’ll stop the excuses and get registered because us southern boys know how to run matches, proofs in the numbers.

Donovan,
My grandfather told me a long time ago "Never argue with an idiot, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience." I hope you have a wonderful night and good luck with your match. I hope you and "Mr. Budlight" can meet somewhere more centrally located and solve the problems of the world! Thanks for you gracious contributions and great history lesson.

(Humm) Rather curious who is Mr.Budlight.

Ok I will do one post and then leave. Donovan, my hat is out to Jim Cline for stepping up and volunteering to host The Tack Driver. I proposed it about four years ago at the IBS Winter Meeting. There was an immediate buzz in the meeting room. I said my plate was full and needed someone to take it on. Despite the interest and the “what if’s”, we had no volunteers until Jim said he would do it.

As to your points. We do not live in a perfect world. To be successful in life, or any endeavor, you work with the resources that are available. I have a fantasy of developing a grand shooting complex in Las Vegas with an array of state of the art ranges of all types, including an indoor 300 meter benchrest range of 75 benches. That is for summer, the outdoor one I would have would be of the same grandeur. I would get a casino architect to design the facilities and it would have luxury suites. I truly have had this in my head....for years. It would be the world’s best by light years. The missing link is the $500 million.

So...we are going to have one helluva shoot at Mid-Carolina Gun Club on November 14-15, 2020. They have a 300 meter benchrest range. Not many of those around. They have 20 benches. So unless we run 3 minute relays there has to be a limit of shooters registered. November is after almost all of the shooting season. Near coastal South Carolina is pretty pleasant at that time of the year. So, there you have our rationale.

Hunting season? Yep. We all have to set priorities. It is only one weekend. Come of you want. Wanna chase Bambi? Go ahead. I have to concede that it would be far better to have The Tack Driver in February at Stover’s Supermega Shooting Resort and Casino. I am looking for investors!!

I posted on benchrest.com yesterday in response to another curmudgeon. I wrote that benchrest needs to get a pulse. We need some excitement, some buzz to develop interest in benchrest. We have a brand. We ARE the Formula One of shooting. Let’s celebrate that and not hide. It is a tough game with zero margin for error. What shooting game can you shoot next to the best in the game? You can in benchrest. My friends, benchrest is the deep end of the pool. We all know that. That is why benchrest shooters are renowned for lending a helping hand to new shooters. It has often been said that “shooters find us, we don’t find them”. A new benchrest shooter needs to have enough self-confidence to finish at the bottom of the list. There is a glass ceiling in our game that takes work and dedication to break.

The Tack Driver is IBS’s effort to promote benchrest and riflle accuracy shooting. We shoot The Most Accurate Rifles In The World. That is not bull. It is true and we need to market it.

Yes, I hope that IBS grows too. I am not sure how many other sanctioning bodies gives each of its members a direct vote on rule book and bylaws changes. The IBS does now. I have trust in our membership (99 % anyway) to do the right thing as precision shooters and ladies and gentlemen.

This new fun shoot-The Tack Driver-is built on using the resources and dedicated volunteers to build some excitement in benchrest shooting. And bring in a vast array of accurate rifles.

I hope we pack the range. If not, we tried mightily.

IBS President

Thanks for your opinion Donovan. I'm sure you know what they say about opinions, if not call me and I will explain it to you. You have the ability to host a match however you see fit in whatever part of the country you would like. Good luck in your endeavor and may you have 300-400 people attend yours. I wish you well.
Jim Thank You for stepping up to the plate and making this happen . From the sponsors that have already committed in just a few days it’s amazing . As for the crickets don’t worry about it some think they will have 200 and get 4 . This is going to be a blast I don’t care if we don’t have but 50 because best I Know will be there and at the end of the day if you hold it run it fair and have a good time they will return and bring

Thanks for getting it rolling jeff and jim. I hope it becomes a mainstay. The different games are what has had me drawn in the last couple years at non registered matches and this type of match will draw in a lot of folks- maybe not the first year but sure will on the second year. If we can get the match going that this thread is about it will be epic as well. Since we could easily follow ibs rules on targets and will on the guns maybe it could become an ibs match as well.

Im curious as to how the st louis match discussion has turned to the tackdriver discussion?

Apparently someone from outside the east coast had their own opinion. Had no idea just how big of a hard on they had for ole Donovan lol.

Maybe someone like you or George should start their own thread about St. Louis:D! I know one thing, if Jeff's indoor range was pushed out to 1,000 I could miss the mulie rut!

I would love to go see this indoor shooting mecca when jeff gets it up and running thats for sure.

Tom I believe I started the thread to see if there was interest in getting shooters to try the different disciplines at the nationals and accumulate points to find the best of the best. rules seemed easy enough you had to shoot one of each group and score, With ALL Bench Rest organizations involved. Yes it would be tough as the each National brings the best, but thats what it was about...One agg. at each discipline. I am hopefull the tackdriver works but excluding the whole midwest and west coast well I'll leave it alone...

Personally I don't see a problem with the location, if you feel that you are good enough to try your hand at this Go For It. People travel all over the world to shoot in different matches.
Me personally I don't feel I am good enough to shoot at that level so I wouldn't, I might show up to meet some of the good folks that are here on the forum and to watch/support the guys I know that will in all likelihood go to shoot the match.
I also think it is about time someone decided to try and bring all the different disciplines together for a shoot off and maybe bring some interest into the game.
