How not to set up your posting . . . .

Rather than respond to a couple of postings I've just seen, I'd rather avoid any fight or temper and just post this separately. My comments are especially targeted to posts that start a new thread.

Your title . . . . Please indicate in your wording something about the content of your thread. I just read one with the title, "Hot Damn . . . . Gosh" or something like that. How about something more descriptive, such as "Extraction problem with a 94 Winchester".

Coarse words . . . . Some forums screen for these, and other forums seem to let some of them get by. I'm referring here to so-called four-letter coarse words. One posting I just read starts out, "[Something or other] really pissed me off." Why is this sort of language necessary?

Personal? -- don't be . . . . . It almost goes without saying that any sort of personal attack is inappropriate. Choose your wording carefully. You can disagree wth another person's point of view while still remaining strictly civil.

Diverting to personal "asides" -- Some of the persons who post here often have gotten to know certain others almost too well. There seem to be a number of "inside jokes." So . . . one guy posts a totally silly reply, imagining himself quite witty. One of his cohorts answers in the same vein, with more silliness, and self congratulatory chuckling. This goes on, back and forth. The shooting information promised by the thread is strictly history at this point.

I may have forgotten a couple of other offenses against forum etiquette. Feel free to add a couple if you can think of them.

All work and no play gets boring. I agree on watching the not so good words, but this forum is hands down the best one out their. I wish i could meet all the people i have talked to or had dealings with because they have all been great.

I certainly agree with Wayne. With your grand total of 7 postings, maybe you should sit back and just "observe" for a while. Kind of like someone who has never loaded or fired a precision cartridge in their life, and coming on and telling the rest of us, (who have been heavily involved for many years) how to do it. If you have something to contribute, that's a positive posting, and I'm sure most would be open-minded enough to listen. Expect to receive negative responses to negative postings.

Canada Honker,

Have you spent much time on any other forums? Based on your post, I would assume not. Go to an automotive forum and look at how EVERY thread is full of arguments. You're go there for the purpose of gaining some knowledge, but can't find what you're looking because of the non-stop bickering filling the forums. That does not apply to this forum.

On most forums, when someone posts their opinion, someone starts an argument with them, almost immediately. That doesn't happen here. The purpose of a forum is to exchange thoughts, opinions, and findings, then discuss them with fellow enthusiasts. It sounds like you're looking for a place that exchanges only scientifically proven data that can not be argued, or approached with any other method.

Have you ever been to a shooting range, or a match? In my opinion, the "tone" on this forum is very close to that of a face-to-face conversation at the range. Do you disapprove of friendly conversations at the range too?

Nothing wrong with this Forum. Best there is. Once the cost of my new F Class rifles has been paid off I am going to make a money donation to help Forum Boss run the site.

Early on as a Forum member I got bent out of shape by a posting in which the spelling and grammar was so bad that I had to guess what the guy was trying to say. I posted as such and received a reply that if I didn`t like his spelling, don`t bother reading his posting. The reply didn`t bother me but I wouldn`t react like that again. You have to accept people for what they are.

I try to make positive contributions and don`t worry about the other guy. Just worry about the quality of your own postings.

okie doke

Well tie me up and start the spankin!!!! I am guilty of trying to be witty & silly. ;D

And I always will be, humor is good for the soul!!

Actually considering some of the other firearms related sights, I think this one has one of the highest maturity level & showing of self-keyboard-control.

Bear in mind, alot of folks on here have inside jokes, etc, and its because we are a friendly lot and many here have known each other along time and have made many new friends. I know I have.

Subject matter titles, well lets leave that up to the original poster. If he has a tech question looking for help, well if he expects help he ought to word it well. If he doesnt, nobodys fault but his lack of writing skills... If a subject title doesent interest me, I wont read it... But there are alot of post with goofy titles that have great info in em because of the knowledge if the orig poster.

Like Alf would ever get caught with a Win 94??? You need to lurk and see the kinda rigs this guy has.. My point being is, this is an example of I am gonna read what Alf wrote, regardless of subject title.. The cat knows his doo-doo or should I say, the individual is very knowledgable about sporting firearms.. :D

One needs to remember we are little more than boys playing with our toys in the sandbox.... ;)

Great people & great info here! So please stick around Honker man and feel the love, you'll see it shine thru if you give us a chance!! :-*

Rod in Soggy Fargo!!!

Most of the responces are right on. This is a GOOD forum, try a few others an you'll Know that.
And your right honker, it's just like this thread;
I won't bother reading it again.

I DO sometimes wish there was an "Ignore" feature though, just to block the few trolls that make it on.

I would suggest you read all of ALF's posts. He certainly has forgot more about custom rifles than most will ever no.

Hey Canada Honker,

I agree with most of your suggestions but I don’t see the need to convert your suggestions into rules.

This site has some humor, personal flair and some members know each other. I like it when a thread or post contains some humor and familiarity. This site has far more maturity, wisdom and solid advice in it as compared to other gun websites. If you want to verify my statement join calguns.net.

I don’t have a lot of posts because I read more than post, but I have monitored this site for years, the same may be applicable to you. However, the number of posts does create some sort of hierarchy. When I served in the Marine Corps, there was a not so subtle understanding that your position on the totem pole was elevated as your time in service increased.

Ya know,,,, I just read a post this morning that was titled "OUCH".
And another one that the guy said he couldn't remember "SHIT"!!!
Who do these people think they are?! :) :D

And life goes on!!!!

Enjoy it. Lighten up!

I can't help but agree with the above posts! AS far as ALF's post I enjoyed it! As well I understand the same feeling he probably had making some progress with something he has worked very hard at. Or study for sometime!

Personaly I'm happy for ALF!

It's like TheBlueEyedBear said "Life Goes ON" If Two fourm members have a inside joke going on between them. I see that as a (A&B) conversasion, and probably best if I (C) my way out of it!

Try a few other sites and see what kind of language you read. It will make the members on this site look like saints!

Thanks
Mark

I'm kind of new here myself. Man, the stuff you can learn on here. I've been shooting all my life and I'm seeing new things ever day on here. Don't sweat the little things Honker. Life is to short. Set back and enjoy and welcome aboard.

Ditto on what Stare said above ....except for the phrase ( in the interest of pleasing the website police) "You have to accept people for what they are"........ This is grammatically incorrect...it should say "you have to accept people for WHO they are." ;D
Sure glad the OP didn't take exception to my use of all caps in my user name. ::)

ok you still got it wrong.... "you have to accept people for WHOM they are" inserto smiley face....

Don't sweat the small stuff because it is all SMALL STUFF

Well crap, dang and poopoo.
Now I forgot what I was going to say. Oh yea,
Don't police us until you know us.
